NEW ZEALANDER IN R.A.F. AWARD LIST

An attack on a miltary target in (he Berlin area with the new type of bomber carrying a special bomb load., has gained an award for an unspecified officer pilot in the latest R.A.F. list. Part of the flight had to be in daylight ever enemy territory and this officer led .the sortie, which was successful. When within four miles. of his base on the return journey his engines failed, but he succeeded in making a crash landing.

Acting Flight Lieutenant R. F. Martin, who receives a bar to his Distinguished Flying Cross, is an airman who escaped from an internment camp in Luxembourg on Christmas Eve, 1939, The list, also contains one Distinguished Service Order, 35 D.F.C. and 50 Distinguished Flying Medals. The recipients come from Great Britain. Eire and the Dominions, includingNew Zealand.

The Distinguished Flying Cross.has been awarded to Pilot Officer Richard James Bolland (says the Press Associa

tion). The citation states: “Pilot Officer Bollard has carried out raids on Cologne, Kiel, Bremen,. Brest, Merignae, and Berlin. Each flight has been characterized by meticulous thoroughness in preparation and .by consequent success. He has always succeeded in attacking a target of major importance, and he has often taken excellent photographs of the target area. He has always shown persistent skill and determination.”
