Major-General Young Appointed
TITLE, DIRECTOR-GENERAL
The appointment of Major-General R. Young, C. 8., C.M.G., D. 5.0., as Director-General of the Home Guard, is announced. General Young has held the appointment of Dominion commander since the Home Guard was inaugurated in 1940, and he now vacates this appointment for the new one of Director-General, which carries with it the rank of brigadier.
Brigadier Young served with distinction throughout the Great War, rising from battalion commander to
brigade commander. He was wounded at Messines, mentioned in dispatches five times, and received the decorations C. 8., C.M.G., D. 5.0., and Legion d’Honneur (Croix de Chavelier).
He joined the New Zealand Staff Corps in 1919. He commanded the Southern Military District, and, in December, 1925, was appointed general officer comma the New Zealand Military Forces, from which office he retired at the end of 1931.
