Distinction For Two New
Zealanders
Commander F. E. Taylor, R.N.V.R. (N Z.), who, according lo cable advice from London, has been awarded the D.S.C., was formerly in command of the Wellington Division of the R.N.V.R His wife lives in Wellington.
Commander Taylor was born in
England in 1902. In 1917 he went t.<
sea as apprentice in the Blue Funnel Line, and served in troopships in the North Atlantic till the Armistice. He was awarded the British War Medal ind the Mercantile Marine Wat Medal In 1924 he served in the Staffordshire Imperial Yeomanry, reaching the rank of sergeant. In April, 1928, he was appointed probationary sub-lieu in the Otago Division of the R.N.V R (N.Z.). In June, 1929, tie was trans ferred to the Wellingloi Division, and in October. 1937, was pi ■■moled to lieu tenant-commander amt appointed executive officer, Wellington Division In January, 1938, fie was promoted to hcting-commandei and appointed in command at Wellingtoi l Division. Ii February. 1939, he was confirmed in the rank of commander. In April 1940, he was mobilized tor service under the -Admiralty and left New Zea land with a large number of R.N V R officers and men in .May: Shortly aftm his arrival in England he was appoint ed in command of II M.S Ash. employ ed on minesweeping dinips in Hom waters.
Lieutenant-Commando J <• lid Hard, R.N.V.R. (NZ.) who is report ed to have beer mentioned in dis patches, was born in 1998. In Septem her. 1928, he wat appointed paymaster sub-lieutenant. Auckland Division R.N.V.R. (N.Z.). In lime, 1931. he was transferred io the execiilivj branch, and in Jane’, 1932 was pronmt ed to lieutenant. In November. 1939 he was appointed executive officer »t the Auckland Division- and in April 1940, was mobilized fo- service over seas with the Admiralty lie left X'"' Zealand with tin R..V\ K draft ear 1 ' in May In June. 1940 he was pro moted to lieutenant-commander. Short ly after arrival in England he was appointed in command of 11.M.5.
