: . — o— For New Zealand Troops Overseas CONVALESCENT DEPOT Staffed By Dominion Doctors And Nurses . Arrangements to send overseas attached to the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force fullyequipped general hospitals and a ' convalescent depot, staffed entirely by New Zealanders, were announc- - ed on Saturday by the Minister of Defence, Mr. Jones. He said the decision had been made, after full consultation with the Imperial authorities, with the object of assuring that New Zealand soldiers wonk be treated in their own hospital by doctors and nurses from their own country. The Government felt that this country should provide the whole of the services necessary for the comfort and wellbeing of the livision it had undertaken to equip md maintain in the field. Rapid Expansion Possible. •‘The general hospital will be so organized that rapid expansion will be possible. It will be under the command of a colonel, who will have a headquarters . staff, including a medical registrar. The hospital will consist of two main divisions-- medical and surgical. The commanding officers and all commissioned officers will, of course, be qualified doctors. “The staff of the medical division will include certain specialists —a specialist in tropical diseases and an eye, 'ear, nose and throat specialist, a bacteriologist (a medical officer) assisted by a bacteriological technician, a radiologist (assisted by a radiological technician), and an anaesthetist. The . commanding officer of , the medical division will be a physician specializing in that branch of medicine, an J there will be three other highlyqualified physicians. - . “The surgical division will be staffed by four surgeons of high professional repute, including the commanding officer. who will be a specialist in surgery. There will, in addition, be certain personnel attached, including a dental officer with a staff of dental mechanics, clerks and orderlies,, and three chaplains. The male staff will also include a quartermaster with commissioned rank, sergeants, staff-sergeants ard other ranks. Nursing Staff. “The nursing staff, will consist of a matron' a sub-matron, theatre sisters, sisters and staff nurses, masseurs and a dietitian, who will become members of the New Zealand Army Nursing Service. ‘“The ’ convalescent hospital will be well and efficiently staffed. “This hospital building will also be capable of rapid expansion. It will deal with those men regarded capable of eventual return to their units. The extent of military training' the patients will be permitted to undertake and the stage at which they become fit for active service will be determined by a medical board attached to the con valescent hospital. Certain comba ant officers and n.c.o.’s experienced in graduated physical training will be attached to supervise training of the patients as they become fit for aMd duty. Officer Commanding the Ist General Hospital. — Colonel A. C. McKillop, M. 8., Ch.B., formerly Assistant Director of Medical Services, Southern Military District. Previously Colonel ' McKillop commanded the 3rd Field Ambulance in the Territorial Forces. He had considerable experience overseas during the Great War, and since then has been active in the Territorial Forces. Up to the present he lias held an important administrative Govern meat post in Christchurch.

F.A.C.S Colonel Stout will'be the. surgical spe cialist of the hospital. He is well known in Wellington as a consulting , surgeon and is senior honorary surgeon to the Wellington Hospital. During the last war he went overseas with the Australian Imperial Force, and was Deputy-Assist-ant Director of Medical Services, 4th Division, Australian Army Medical Corps. Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat SpecialMajor J. A. Doctor, M.D., F.R.C.S. (Edinburgh), of Wellington. He saw service during the last war with the New Zealand Field Ambulance and No. 2 General Hospital. Has been for a number of years in practice in Wellington as an eye, ear, nose and throat specialist. Physician.—Captain A. H. Kirker M.R.C.P., F.R.A.C.P., of Auckland, a consulting physician and an honorarc physician to the Auckland Hospital. Specialist in Tropical Diseases. - Captain 'E.' G. Sayers. M.R C.P.
