“THE WHITE RIBBON” Editor’s Annual Report Year Ending 31st December 1956

It gives me pleasure to present a brief report upon the 7th year of my work as Editor of our Official Organ, “The White Ribbon”. From the Editorial viewpoint, the year has been uneventful, and as each year closes, there seems little that is new to be reported. The subject matter of the paper has followed the general pattern of endea\ouring to provide useful material for our Unions, and convincing reading for all whom “The White Ribbon” reaches.

It had long been my desire to feature one or more regular columns, such as the one, “Candid Comments” by Citizen. We appreciate the work of “Citizen” for interesting and useful comments and information supplied. A “Question and Answer” column will appear when a writer can be found. I would like to hear of someone interested in undertaking this. In August the Dominion Officers deemed it advisable to combine the October-November issues to ease the difficult financial situation, thus relieving the “W.R.” Funds to the extent of £75-£BO

We are again indebted to those who have contributed articles for publication each month and on your behalf 1 would express thanks and appreciation to our Dominion President, Mrs. Toomcr, for her Monthly Message of encouragement and to Mrs. R. C. Green of Dargaville (now th?* Mayoress), for inspiring Devotions, and to Mrs. F. I. T. Grigg, Vice-President, for her regular "Legal and Parliamentary” reports for Union meetings.

We are also appreciative of contributions from others during the year particularly mentioning Herbert Hoaie of Queensland and for helpful information and articles from Overseas’ “Exchanges’*. I am pleased to know that many of these “Exchange” magazines make use of our “White Ribbon", and we hoffe that they will continue to do so

To our Union News reporters, and Convention reporters. I express my thanks for their regular and concise reports. May 1 again sincerely thank all those who have sent greetings and letters during the year. Your messages have been appreciated. The Beacon: I have again enjoyed th* preparation of our teenage paper, and have been very pleased to receive many encouraging letters from young readers. It is gratifying to find that so tnanv of the BC. age group find an interest in the “Beacon”. Writers particularly like the stories and the news of athletes and others who figure in World News, and Miss I. Campbell’s Devotional Corner. We would thank Miss Campbell for this valuable spiritual column, so willingly contributed. ‘ W.R.” Supplement for Boys and Girls: This children’s little paper is prepared for children ranging in age from those first able to read, to the end of primary school life. With so small a space available, it is most difficult to cater tur this age ran'"*. Th« pictures for colouring are provided for use by any age. but naturally the colouring work should be in keeping with the child’s class at school. Some very fine work was sent in from Northland District for their Annual Competition, apd their prizes numbered 27 books and many cards. The Colouring Competition is designed to create interest, so that the whole Supplement will find an entrance into many homes,

Note: The cost of ti e Supplement is 3/- per 10(1, whereas the Beacon, a larger paper, costs 6/. per 1(X) copies. Thanks and Appreciation. We extend our warm thanks to aP who have shared in the “White Ribbon” wo;k; to our Agents who attend to the distribution if the Youth papers. To Mr. Carman and the staff of Messrs. Wright & Carman Ltd., Wellington, otir publishers, 1 would again extend my sincere appreciation of tlicir help and co-operation, and thank them for their work and tlicir willingness to assist in every v' ay necessary. In conclusion, may I urge that vve make “The White Ribbon" our personal responsibility. We need a greatly increased circulation; let us endeavor to increase it. Each part of it should contain a message for others as well as ourselves; let us pray urgently and regularly that its spiritual or temperance messages may he a blessing to all \*ho read them. If we seek to do our part in this work for Him, then God will surely bless our -labours.
