Presbyterian General Assembly.
The Presbyterian General Assembly, which met m S. John's Church, Wellington, m November, reaffirmed, without a single dissentient, its adherence to the platform of the Bible m State Schools League. The Rev. R. J. Porter stated that he found the Nelson system inadequate, and urged the adoption of the Australian system as the satisfactory solution of the problem. The Rev. I. Jolly, m a learned address, pointed out that the . Australian system was an adaptation to modern conditions of the Presbyterian principles laid down by John Knox, and followed by. the Church of Scotland ever since. The Revs. R. Bvan Davies and Dr. Gibb also spoke. The Assembly fixed the second Sunday m December to be observed by all Presbyterian Churches as Bible m State Schools Sunday, and directed" that an appeal for financial ielp be made that day. The lead given by the Presbyterian Church has been followed by the Bishops of Wellington and Nelson, and by the Dean of Chris tchurch, administrator of the Diocese, who have reqjuested the clergy of those Dioceses to observe the second Sunday, m Advent;, and m the case of the Diocese of Chris tchurch the administrator has requested that the whole of the evening collections that Sunday shall be given to the funds of the Iyeague. It is probable that the observance of this Sunday will be general throughout New Zealand m the Churches sympathetic with the movement. Canon Garland, by invitation, addressed the Assembly, >dealiag with the Roman opposition to the movement. On his entering the Assembly he was received by all the members standing, and ,on completing his address they spontaneously rose to their feet with marked demonstrations of approval.
