Felonies and other Offences.

Warrants have been issued by the Invercargill Bench for the arrest of John Campbell Kerr, charged with forging and uttering a promissory note for £2O at Invercargill on the 20th of October last. Offender is a Scotchman, late editor and part owner of the ‘ Western Star ’ newspaper, Riverton, about 28 years of age, 5 feet G or 7 inches high, slight , build, fair complexion, light hair, thin sandy whiskers and moustache, rather thin, featuers, blue eyes constantly vacillating, stoops when walking, is addicted to drink and keeps late hours. He left this Province for Melbourne about the end of October last. He is married to the daughter of a man named McDonald who formerly kept an hotel, but who now keeps a dairy at Morderalloe, which place it is supposed he occasionally visits where it is believed his wife resides with her parents, or with her sister at the same place, who is married to a market gardener.

A warrant has been issued by the Palmerston Bench for the arrest of William G. Hamilton charged with obtaining £2O on the 18th ultimo at Palmerston, from James C. Glassford, by means of a valueless cheque. Offender is a North of Ireland man, a gardener or laborer, 37 years of age (looks younger) 5 feet, 9 inches high, medium build, fresh complexion, brown hair cut short, sandy whiskers worn all round, awkward gait; wore dark grey tweed paget coat, and double-breasted vest of same material the lower button of which is generally open, brown and white ribbed tweed trousers, elastic-side hoots, and black felt hat, frequents hotels and is addicted to drink. He represents himself as nephew to Captain Hamilton, the squatter.

' A warrant has been issued by the Invercargill Bench for the arrest of a man, name unknown, charged with obtaining 10s. on the 21st ultimo at Invercargill, from Patrick Silk, by means of a valueless cheque. Offender is about 30 years of age,. 5 feet 11 inches high, well built, stout make, auburn whiskers, beard, and moustache, clipped to about two inches long, good looking, dressed in grey clothes pretty well worn, and brownish hat. He was accompanied by a man of low set stature, dressed in dark clothes.

A warrant has been issued by the Dunedin Bench for the arrest of Michael Henry Phelan, charged with deserting his wife and child at Oam on the 21st ultimo. Offender is a Welchman, a laborer, 23 years of ago, 5 feet G inches high, stout build, dark whiskers and moustache, chin shaved, wears earrings, dressed in blue sac coat and vest, moleskin trousers, drab hat and blucher boots.

A man of the following description is charged with having assaulted and attempted to rob William Gall, on the Woodhaugh road, near the Water of Leith, Dunedin, between 8 and 9 oclock on the night of the 3rd instant. Offender is described as being between 30 and 40 years of age, short and stout build, thin features, no whiskers, wore dark coat, white trousers and heavy boots.

William Murphy is charged with having recently (date not given) deserted from Her Majesty’s ship “ Dido” at Auckland, and for whose arrest £3 reward is offered. He is an Irishman, an able seaman, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 61 inches high, dark eyes, hair, and complexion, black whiskers and moustache, rolling gait, square build. He was arrested

in January, 1873, by constable Sullivan, at Campbelltown for a similar offence, Vide Otago Police Gazette, 1872, page 72, and 1873 page 4.

A man of the following description is charged with having wilfully and obscenely exposed his person to Elizabeth Allan, aged 11 years in Albany-street, Dunedin, on the 13th ultimo. Offender is between 30 and 35 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, rather stout build, round face, dark complexion, dark brown hair, moustache and Yankee beard, dressed in short blue coat, slit in back, blue vest, grey trousers, black round hard felt hat and elasticside boots, small feet, supposed to be a sailor. Identifiable.

Stolen between the 12th and 18th ultimo from the stable of John Cheqwedpen at Shotover Bridge, an imitation hogskin saddle, about two years in use, a small bole in off knee pad, and a cut- across scat, crupper and martingale attached. Value £7. Identifiable.

Stolen on the Bth instant from the Masonic Hall, Moray Place, Dunedin, a grey striped faded buggy cover, has been repaired and washed several times, the property of R. Hudson. Value .10s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 10th instant from the person of John McMeean, in the Provincial Sale Yards, Dunedin, two £5 notes on the Union Bank of Australia and Colonial Bank of New Zealand, four £1 notes, one on the Colonial Bank of New Zealand.

Stolen between 9 p.m. on the Bth and 8 a.m. on the 9th instant from the shop of Joseph Braithwaite, Fleet-street, Dunedin, about a dozen books, Novels by Emmeth, Young Folks’ story book, and a sixthmouth part of Every Week. Value £1 ss. Identifiable

Stolen about the 7th instant, in the Commercial Hotel, Tokomairiro, from the person of John McEarlane, while drunk, a silver hunting centre seconds stop watch No. 7877, Maker, Euchardet, London, long link plain Albert gold chain and locket attached. Value £l9. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 9th instant, at Oamaru from the person of William Walker, two £.lO notes on the Bank of New Zealand, Nos. 014,644, and 01,592. Identifiable.

Stolen between 10 p.m. on the 19th and G a.m. on the 20th ultimo from a bedroom in Weaver’s Koval Hotel, Invercargill, 24 £1 notes on the Colonial Bank of New Zealand, Invercargill branch, four of the notes are numbered 36441, 36442, 36443, and 36444, the remaining notes are supposed to be numbered consecutively from 36421, to 36440. or from 36461 to 36480, the property of John Mapples. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Charles Weaver, an Irishman, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark complexion, dark hair, beard and moustache, dressed in light tweed clothes and black hat.

Stolen on the 2nd instant, from the clothes line of Alice Wright, at Kensington, near Dunedin, a linen

night gown, nearly new, marked Louisa Cook. Value 10s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to a Mrs. Hayley, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, fair complexion, black hair and blue eyes.

Stolen on the the 11th ultimo at Bonifice’s cutting, Mount Pleasant, Southland District, from the person of Wellesley P. Despard, while drunk, a silver lever hunting watch, maker’s name and number at present unknown, a £5 note on the Bank of Hew Zealand, and two £1 notes. Watch value £9, and identifiable. Suspicion attached to Arthur Dimock, an Englishman, 30 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, stout compact build, fair hail’, small light coloured beard and moustache, fair complexion, slightly deaf, wore black clothes, and black Wide-a-wake hat, supposed to be a sailor, and to have come to Dunedin.

Stolen between the 21st and24th ultimo' from the dwelling of John Casey at Anderson’s Bay, an old open face, silver Geneva watch, cap lifts with hinge, deer engraved on cap, bow wanting, Maker, Hander, another name on case, Ho. 14588. Value £l. Identifiable.

Stolen, on the Ist instant, from the person of John Bailey, in the Ballarat Hotel, at Arrowtown, nine £1 notes. Suspicion attached to David Johnston, a Scotchman, 32 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, medium build, sallow complexion.

Stolen on the 24th ultimo, from the person of Jeremiah O’Keefe, while drunk in Moray place, Dunedin, a £lO note, four £1 notes, and 17s (3d in silver. Suspicion attached to a man of the following description : about 40 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, dark hair, sandy whiskers, beard, and moustache, wore dark grey tweed clothes, and black felt hat.

Stolen, between the 26th and 30th ultimo, from the hut of Edward Tohill, Waipori Bush, a white cotton bedcover, much worn, one of the corners torn, a nearly new red and white checked woollen bedcover, bound at both ends with red braid. Value, £1 6s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to two men of the following description —lst, about 55 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, slender build, sallow complexion, grey hair, whiskers, and moustache, dressed in old grey tweed clothes, has the appearance of an old hand ; 2nd, about 35 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, stout build, fresh complexion, dark hair, whiskers and moustache, wore blue clothes, supposed to bo a sailor.

Stolen, between 9 a.m. on the 4th and 7 a.m. on the sth instant, from a cabin of the ship “ Rosalia,” at the Graving Dock, Port Chalmers, a pair of dark tweed trousers and vest, a pair of brown tweed trousers and vest of same material, a long white Berlin wool muffler with blue stripe in centre, a black and white check Crimean shirt, a brown and grey Crimean shirt, a white and blue striped regatta shirt, and a white handle penknife, the property of Thomas Hay. Value £5. Identifiable. Stolen; at the same time, from the ship’s pantry, 4 new knives and forks, brown handles, the property of the owners of the ship. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 18th ultimo from the yard of the Universal Hotel, Maclaggan-street. Dunedin, a plain therm gig whip, nearly new, the property of Joseph Young. Value, 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 13th ultimo, from the person of "William Wilson, between Tokomairiro and Lawrence while travelling by Yeends coach, six £1 notes and a coach ticket from Tokomairiro to Lawrence, in favor of William Wilson. Ticket only identifiable. Suspicion attached to Maurice Lee and Maurice Collins. Lee is a native of London, 27 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, dark complexion, hazel eyes, dark hair, wore Yankee beard and small moustache, crucifix, ship, bracelet, and crown tattooed on right arm, ship, sailor, and pair of flags on left arm, wore black paget coat, light tweed trousers and vest. Collins is 21 years of age, 5 feet 1 inch high, fair complexion, blue eyes, no beard or whiskers, slight build, a bunch of warts on throat, wore dark tweed coat, dark striped vest and trousers, and black felt hat. Both men are supposed to be professional gamblers.

Stolen on the 10th ultimo, from the person of Diehard Darcey, at Hampden, a brown leather pocket book, leather strap fastening, containing five or six £1 notes on the Colonial Bank of Hew Zealand, two carte de visits of a man and woman, and two letters addressed ‘ Richard Darcey ’ All identifiable except the money. Suspicion attached to Ellen Fitzgerald, Irish, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, sallow complexion, fair hair, slender build, shabbily dressed, dissipated appearance.

Stolen on the Ist instant, from a clothes-line in Stafford-street, Dunedin, a calico shirt, small tear across the waist has been repaired, a calico nightgown nearly new, plain breast drawn at shoulders, and a calico chemise, the property of Mrs. Tierney. Value, 7s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 15th ultimo, from the dwelling of Alexander Fisher, Maclaggan-street, Dunedin, a brown overcoat, heavy hairy material, right sleeve, collar, and buttons wanting, bound with black braid, two outside flap pockets,, and an inside left breast pocket. Value £2. Identifiable.

Stolen about the 18th ultimo, from a clothes line in a right of way off Walker- street, Dunedin, a black and white striped Crimean shirt, nearly "new, a white flannel shirt, with small slit in back of neck, the property of Sarah Millar. Value 18s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Alexander Johnson, supposed to be English, a new arrival, 21 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, slight build, brown hair, no hair on face, poekpitted, downcast appearance.

Stolen on the 23 ultimo, from the dwelling of Marion Bailey, Cooper’s ground, off Walker-street, Dunedin, 6 or 7 yards of flannel, 8 yards of calico, and a half sovereign. Value 15s. Flannel and calico identifiable. Suspicion attached to a woman known as “Emma,” an English woman, about 5 feet 2 inches high, stout build, fair hair and complexion, wears maroon dress.

During the month of March last, a cow, the property of Joseph Glass, was wounded with shot at Ida Valley, from the effects of which she died. Suspicion attached to Charles Carson, an Irishman, a farmer, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, dark complexion, dark hair, whiskers, beard and moustache.

Stolen or strayed. — light hay hack, branded J.P. on near shoulder, about 5 years old. Value £l4, the property of William Smith, was stolen, or strayed from a paddock at Kensington, near Dunedin, on the

night of the 25th or morning of the 26th ultimo. This horse was ridden, from Tapanui to Dunedin by Arthur Neville, on the 10th ultimo, and as the horse is now the subject of a criminal prosecution against Neville, it is requested that diligent search and enquiry may be made for him.

Stolen on the 9th instant, from the person of Donald Kennedy, in the Universal Hotel, Maclagganstreet, Dunedin, a £5 note, four £1 notes, and about 16s. in silver. Suspicion attached to a man of the following description: Supposed to be English, a sailor, about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, sandy hair, moustache, and imperial, cheeks shaved, a small black spot on one cheek, wore black coat, no vest, striped tweed trousers, and black Scotch cap with peak.

Stolen on the 24th ultimo from Dalkeith, near Port Chalmers, about 300 feet of kauri tongued and grooved boards, from 12 to 14 feet long, 51 inches wide by f inch thick, 2 pieces of lead about 24-lb >3. each 42 inches long by 12 inches broad, the property of A Hyslop. "Value, £3 12s. Lead supposed identifiable.

Stolen on the 6th instant from the dwelling of William Barker, York Place, Dunedin, 4 tea and 2 desert silver spoons, the letters A.G. engraved on handles. .Identifiable.

Stolen, on the 11th ultimo, from the yard of John [Robertson, King street, Dunedin, 8 pigeons, one white with black tail, one black and white, one white and slate color, one black, one black with white feather in top of each wing, one black with white spot on tail, one red, and one light slate color. Stolen, on the sth instant, from the dwelling of James Stuart, Selkirk, Kaikorai Hill, near Dunedin, a half sovereign, and Os 6d in silver.

Stolen, during the night of the 3rd instant, from the mining claim of Frazer and party, at Bracken’s Cully, Arrow, a quantity of auriferous earth, supposed to contain about 12oz. of gold.

Early on the morning of the sth instant, a Chinaman of the following description was found stealing fowl from the yard of George Purnell, at South Kensington, near Dunedin. Description : about 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, very dark complexion, no hair on face, hair worn long behind, wore dark clothes and leggings, or long boots outside his trousers.
