Felonies and other Offences.

A warrant has been issued by the Riverton Bench for the arrest of Maori Bill, alias W. E. Thompson, alias Kelly, alias Healy, charged with obtaining £5 and a silver watch and chain by false pretences, from Thomas Price at Otautau, on the 23rd December last and Ist ultimo. Offender is an American, Irish decent, a railway labourer, about 42 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, thin dark features, thin black hair mixed with grey, bald on top of head, cheeks shaved, Yankee beard and moustache, dressed in blue cloth coat, grey tweed trousers, and black hat. This ■ offender has committed several other offences of ' a similar nature. •' .

A warrant has been issued by the Port Chalmers Bench for the arrest of Charles Johnson, charged with deserting his wife and family at Port Chalmers on the 4th ultimo. Offender is a Swede, a lumper, 33 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, stout firm build, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, clean shaved, generally lets his beard-grew for about a week before shaving. He left Port Chalmers on the 4th ultimo, supposed for Lyttelton, or . one of the northern ports, to seek employment as a lumper.

A warrant has been issued by the Lyttelton Bench

for the arrest of John Blackmore, charged with disobeying an order made by that Bench to provide for the support of his wife. Offender is a native of Tasmania, a blacksmith, 31 years of age,' 5 feet 8 inches high, stout build, about 14 stone weight, fresh complexion, grey eyes, sandy beard whiskers and moustache, thick lips, pug nose, anchor on left hand. He worked about a year since at his trade in Dunedin, and went under the names of John Evans and Johnson. He will likely seek employment at an inland town.

Stolen on the 4th instant, from the person of Thomas Cassley, in the Railway Hotel, Tokomairiro, a large size hunting patent lever watch, No, 3228, capped and jewelled. T. Nutsford, Milton, maker. White dial, maker’s name on dial, black figures, gold hands, value £lO. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to William Mathew, a Scotchman, a carpenter, 40 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, stout build,- large beard, whiskers, and moustache, wore dark tweed clothes, lace up boots, and drab felt hat.

Between 7 p.m. on the 27th and 7 a.m. on the 28th ultimo, the shop of Joseph Booth and Company at Oamaru, was burglariously entered, and four pairs of men’s shoes, one piece of red and black tartan, about six pieces of Llama, blue, brown and

dark green colors ; six Crimean skirts ; twelve pairs of socks with red tops ; a brown silk umbrella ; about eight pairs of men’s light drab tweed trousers with black stripes, stolen therefrom. Value, £3O. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 11th ultimo in the Octagon Hotel, Dunedin, from the person of Robert Harvey a silver lever hunting watch. Maker, John T. Coote, Ho. 254534. Value, £6los. Identifiable. A man of the following description who was in Harvey’s company when he lost the watch suspected ; about 23 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, medium build, no hair on face, wore dark clothes.

Oil the night of the 31st December last, a portion of the rigging of the ketch Good Templar was cut and damaged to the value of £2 at Campbelltown wharf, the property of Captain Davis. Suspicion attached to Edwin Jones, assistant cook on the steamer Wanganui.

Stolen about the 9th ultimo, from a quarry at Hill-side, near Dunedin, a pick and three pick handles, the property of John Keefe. Value 9s. Identifiable.

Lost or stolen on the 7th ultimo, from an express waggon in Dunedin, a parcel containing two coloured gold necklets, twisted pattern; two bright gold lockets, small oval pattern ; three small gold brooches and three berlin wool cushions, the property of P. Hayman & Co. Value £3 Is. 9d. Identifiable.

Stolen about the sth of December last, from the dwelling of Charles Skinner, at Caversham, a japanned case, about 7 inches long and 1 inch broad, containing three camel’s hair pencils used by sign writers ; a large putty knife ; a two foot rule in four parts which folds. Value, 14s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to "Walter James, a painter, 24 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, slight build, dark complexion and hair, small dark whiskers and moustache, shaved on chin, arrived by the ship Hindostau.

Stolen between the 10th of November and 19th December last, from the portmanteau of James Cruickshanks, in a hut at Wantwood Station, Southland district, a £5 note on the Commercial Banking Company, Sydney. Suspicion attached to Peter Davis, who was employed as cook on the station, an Englishman, an old whaler, 61 years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, grey hair, clean shaved, speck on one eye.

Stolen on the 12th ultimo from the fowl-house of Eleanor Collins, at the late Volunteer Hotel, Main South road, near Dunedin, 12 common hens, value 30s. Identifiable. Two Chinamen, who cannot be described, were seen taking the hens away, after which they went in the direction of Green Island, while a Chinaman of the following description went into the house and kept Mrs. Collins in conversation. He is about 5 feet 2 inches high, medium build, wore dark clothes, small black moustache, good-looking, speaks English imperfectly, supposed to have a slight cut on the head, caused by falling against a window. Identifiable.

Stolen about the 12th ultimo from the mining claim of Bulfin, Eerris & Co., at Waitahuna, a quantity of auriferous earth.

Charles Johnston, McLaggan street, Dunedin, a medium-sized black and drab reversible waterproof coat, value 255. Identifiable.

Stolen between the 23rd and 25th ultimo from a building in course of erection in Moray place, Dunedin, a new flooring cramp, the property of George 0. Clayton, value 255. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 24th ultimo from the person of Alfred Day, in the house of a Mrs. Simmons, in Albany street, Dunedin, 13 £1 notes and £2 in silver. Suspicion attached to Mrs. Simmons and Ellen Earrell. Simmons is about 34 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, stout build, round full face, fair, complexion, dark hair; Earrell is 18 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, round full face, dark eyes, fair complexion and hair, arrived by the ship “ Corona.”

Stolen between the 3rd and Bth ultimo at Centre Bush, near Winton. two bullock chains, one a heavy drag chain about ten feet long, with small hooks, the letters E G cut with a chisel on hooks ; the other a common leading chain about ten feet long with small hooks at each end, the property of Mr. Plunkett, value £1 15s Identifiable. Stolen about the 4th ultimo from the vest pocket of John Dorns, in a bedroom in the "Winton Hotel, at Wiuton, two £1 notes and an order for £2 2s. 6d. on Cargill, Gibbs and Co., of Invercargill, signed by C. Basstian. Order identifiable.

Stolen about the . 15th ultimo from the mining claim of William Moore, at Naseby, about half a dish of auriferous earth, supposed to contain about an ounce of gold dust.

Institution, London ; a wooden box for holding subscriptions to the Merchant Seamen’s Asylum, London. Both boxes contained about £5 in coin, amongst which there were two sovereigns. Boxes identifiable.

Suspicion attached to a Miss Keison and a Mrs. Heiley, who reside at Kensington. _ Keison is about 28 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, stout build, full round face, fair complexion and hair, wore blue and green Grenadine dress, black velvet jacket, and white bonnet.

Heiley is about 35 years of age, 5 feet 1 inch high, medium build, fair complexion, fair hair turning grey, wore brown rib dress, black lace scarf, white hat and feather.

Lost or stolen between the 2nd and 4th ultimo, in the store of Skene ITaast and Co., at Switzers, a dark green leather purse, about 5 inches long and 3 inches broad, with broad elastic band, containing about 20 £1 notes, supposed on the National Bank of New Zealand. Purse only identifiable.
