Extract from Canterbury Police Gazette.
From 1 Police Gazette ,’ loth February, 1873
Anxious enquiry is being made for tidings of John Paton, who came to New Zealand in 1865 from Queensland, where he had been learning sheep-farming. Shortly after his arrival in New Zealand, he stated his intention of proceeding to the West Coast goldfields. Up to this period he had written with great regularity to his family, but his letters suddenly ceased, and nothing having been heard of him since, fears are entertained for his safety. He was 28 years of age in 1865, 6 feet high, and of fair complexion. Any information respecting him to be forwarded to the Commissioner of Police, Christchurch.
