INCENDIARISM. Maliciously Setting Fire to Three Stacks of Hay. £SO Reward. Whereas on the morning of Wednesday, the Bth of January last, three stacks of hay, situate at the Leaning Rock Pound, near Clyde, the property of William Williams, value £4OO, were destroyed by fire: And whereas, at an inquest held on the 10th and 17th of that month to inquire as to the origin of the said fire, the jury returned the following verdict:“That the stacks did not catch fire by heating ; but how they did catch fire there is no evidence to show And whereas there is reason to believe that the said fire was caused by some evil-disposed person or persons: Notice is hereby given that a reward of fifty pounds will be paid by the Provincial Government of Otago for such information as will lead to the conviction of the person or persons by whom the laid fire was caused. A warrant has been issued by the Lawrence Bench for the arrest of Pon Ah Quon, charged with attempted larceny of a bay mare, 151 hands high, branded CF supposed near shoulder, star on forehead, hind foot white, the property of James Docherty, value £2O, identifiable. T. Offender is a Chinaman, 30 years of age, .s feet 4' inches high, slight build, pockmarked about nose, smart appearance, speaks English, wore blue cloth Cheese jumper, black leather leggings, and carried a am?currier’s bag. 'lids offender represented himself as a Chinese mer to Mr Docherty, from whom he hired the mare at 2Lawrence, on the 25th ultimo, for seven days, for the

"purpose of going to Pomahaka, and has not since returned ; and it has been ascertained that he offered the animal for sale at Manuherika about the Ist instant.

A warrant has been issued by the Port Chalmers Bench for the arrest of Stephen Willis, charged with disobeying a summons to appear at the Police Court at Port Chalmers, on the 26th inst., to answer a charge of making use of obscene language. Offender is an Englishman, a sailor, 22 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, medium build, sullen looking, brown hair and moustache, very little whiskers, grey eyes, cocked nose, rolling gait, dressed in blue cloth coat, brown and grey striped trousers, and blue cloth cap with French peak. This offender is also charged with deserting from the ship Zealandia, at Port Chalmers, on the 25 instant.

Stolen ou the night of the 27th instant,. from the Stuart street Jetty, Dunedin, an iron stern gland, for a screw-steamer, weighing about 28 lbs, the property of Thomas H. Davidson, value £5, identifiable.

Stolen on the 29th instant, from the residence of James Morris, Walker street, Dunedin, a pair of navvy boots, nearly new, laced in front, the property of James Spratley, value 20s, identifiable. Suspicion is attached to Benjamin Jordon,

Stolen, about the 2nd instant, from Dipton Station Southland District, a light grey saddle horse, 9 year* old, about 15 hands high, branded B on near shoulder

black main and tail, goose rumped, the property of George Sewell, value £25. Identifiable.

Stolen, on the night of the 14th instant, from the Glen, near Dunedin, a thorough bred filly, 18 months old, broad white stripe down face, off hind foot white, tail not pulled, the property of James Mowat, value £lO. Identifiable.

Stolen, between 9 p.in. on the 10th and 1 a.m. on the 11th instant, from the person of William Mears, at Lawrence, a £2O note, supposed on the Bank of New South Wales, “L. C. Homes,” Anno Domini, 1873, written on back. Identifiable.

Stolen, on the 17th instant, from the outhouse of G. S. Sale, Walker street, Dunedin, an American washtub, value Bs. Identifiable.

Stolen, on the 6th instant, at Blacks, a black collie dog, about 5 years old, answers to the name of Rover,” the property of, Michael Hagen, value £lO. Identifiable.

Suspicion attached to Patrick Leary. He is an Irishman, a bullock-driver, about 40 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark complexion, stout build, broad Irish accent.

Stolen, on the 20th ultimo, from the premises of John McArthur, Invercargill, four common fowls, one brahmapootra cock, and one young turkey, value 30s. Identifiable.

Stolen, on the night of the 27th ultimo, from a bleach-green in Stuart street, Dunedin, a new embroidered petticoat, without waist-band, three Irish lace ladies’ collars, sailor pattern, four pair ladies stockings, six pocket-handkerchiefs, one set embroidered cuffs, one set of ladies’ embroidered collars, and six linen shirt collars, the property of Mrs McArthur, value £3. Lace collars identifiable.

Stolen, between the sth and 9th instant, from the Commercial Hotel, Tokomairiro, two gold scarf pins, one •with ruby stone and small imitation vine leaf round it; the other larger with greenstone and figured edges, one English gold dress ring, one Colonial gold dress ring, and one keeper ring, with the name George Young, Dunedin, stamped on them; a green leather case containing two gold studs set in mother of pearl, two odd gold studs cut deeply on face, one gold stud with rose in centre and wreath round the edges, and about 16s in silver, the property of Mary Reynolds, value £B. Identifiable.

Some of the jockeys or betting men who were at the Tokomairiro races and lodged at the Commercial Hotel, are suspected of having committed this theft, as they had access to the room from which the articles were stolen.

Stolen, on the 15th instant, from Frederick street, Dunedin, a 1 light mixed colored tweed paget coat, containing some letters in breast pocket, the property of Samuel Pritchard. Identifiable.

On the night of the 14th instant, two monuments and other carved stone work, at North Dunedin, the property of George Munroe, were damaged to the value of from £25 to £3O by a number of boys throwing stones at them. Mr Munroe offers £5 rewaid for the conviction;of the offenders.

Lost, on the Bth instant, by Bishop Neville, between Bishops Court and Princes street, Dunedin, a brown leather pocket-book, with clasp, containing £ls in notes, a cheque on the Union Bank of Australasia,

Dunedin, for £3, payable to self, three bank drafts on the Society for the promotion of Christian Knowledge, and sundry other papers.

Stolen, on the Bth instant, from the shop door of A. and J. McFarlane, Princes street, Dunedin, six tins V of) lobsters,-oval brand, with lobster in centre, value 7s fid. r f

Stolen, about the 19th instant, from the dwelling of Susannah Philips, a ladies small-sized geneva watch, wanting glass and minute hands, value £2 10s. Identiable.

Stolen, on the 3rd instant, from the waggon of Jacob London, at the Shotover Ferry Hotel, Shotover, 3 Crimean shirts, two pair tweed trousers, and two tweed vests, value £5. Identifiable.

Stolen, on 2nd instant, from Edward Bremen’s Hotel, Gore, a silver Geneva watch, No. 82242, maker G. B. Tobies, Liverpool, the property of John Callaghan, value £4. Identifiable.

Stolen, between the 28th ultimo and 3rd instant, from on board the steamer Golden Age, at Dunedin Harbor, a tin japanned cash box, containing three £5 notes on the Bank of New Zealand, one £5 note on the Bank of Otago, seventeen £1 notes, a quantity of Thames Goldfield mining scrip, and an amber mouth-piece for a pipe, the property of William Letham. Cash-box, scrip, and mouth piece identifiable.

Suspicion attached to Henry Collett and William Eadie, who were employed as firemen on board the steamer, but left on the Ist instant. Collett is a fireman, 40 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, dark brown curly hair, thin wiry build, wears goatee. Eadie is a <. fireman, 30 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, fair ■*! hair, whiskers beard and moustache, fair complexion, slight build.

Stolen, on the 2nd instant, from the clothes] fine of Mary Ann Rushton, Melville street, Dunedin, a pair of drawers, inside of band lined with red, and one Crimean shirt, mouse pattern, or like mouse in tartan. Identifiable.

Stolen, on the 27th ultimo, from the hut ,of Beaton Marr, Tokomairiro, a silver lever hunting watch, No. 8290 on works and dial, no second hand, maker W. Cooper, London, with aluminum chain, serpent pattern, and a piece of greenstone [about two inches long attached.

The offender Lewis, alias Willis (vide Police Gazette 1873, page 16) committed this theft, and it is supposed he disposed of the stolen property soon after.

Stolen, during the month of January last, from Dundas’s Station, Hokonui, Southland District, a chestnut draught horse about 5 years old, branded RP near shoulder, the property of Robert Preston, value £25. Identifiable.

Stolen, on the Bth instant, from the person of Peter Graham, at Invercargill, a pocket-book containing fourteen £1 notes and 12s in silver. Pocket-book identifiable.

■ Lost or stolen from fthe person of John McDonald in Rattray street, Dunedin, on the 24th instant, a silver verge watch, No. 8375, not much worn. Indentifiable.
