(From our own correspondent.) ~ ■-_' April 22. Mr. Thomas Cahill, of the Cathedral parish, has been gazetted a Justice of the Peace. "The Merrymakers" are still busily engaged giving entertainments in aid of Nazareth House; They recently gave successful entertainments at Rangiora and Southbridge, their clever juvenile efforts meeting with general appreciation. The Girls' Hostel has a social arranged for April 19 for the benefit of the same institution. The ordinary meeting of St. Matthew's (Ladies) branch of the Hibernian Society was held on Monday last, Sister K. Sloan, S.P., presiding. Sick allowance (£3 10s) was passed for payment, and three nominations for membership were received. Sister Sloan is anxious to reorganise the "Fireside Evenings" that proved such an attraction in former years, and at next meeting the first of the new series will be held. An excellent programme has been arranged. At St. Patrick's branch meeting Bro. E Fitzgerald, 8.P., presented Bro. Upjohn, P.P., . with a pastpresident s collar in recognition of his services during his 12 months' term of office.
