DIOCESE OF AUCKLAND

(From our own correspondent.) April 6. On Easter Sunday morning in St. Patrick's Cathedral, Pontifical High Mass was celebrated by his Lordship Dr. Liston, who also preached a very beautiful and forceful sermon on the truth of the Resurrection. Father Herring, S.M., was assistant priest; Fathers Shore and Murphy, deacon and subdeacon respectively; Very Rev. Chancellor* Holbrook first master of ceremonies, and Father Bradley, Adm., second. The evening devotions, which were largely attended notwithstanding a heavy downpour of rain, consisted of Solemn Vespers and Benediction. Very Rev. Chancellor Holbrook preached the sermon, taking for his text: "This is the day the Lord hath made, let us be glad and rejoice therein." He gave a very eloquent discourse on the festival and held the rapt attention of his hearers for forty minutes. Right Rev. Dr. Cleary, Bishop of Auckland, now on his return to New Zealand, has greatly improved in health. He was at Rome about the middle of February, and will probably arrive in Auckland in June. Right Rev. Dr. Liston, Coadjutor-Bishop, left on Tuesday, April 3, on a visitation to Gisborne, Ormond, Opotiki, and surrounding districts. He. was accompanied by the Very Rev. Chancellor Holbrook. The parish of St. Joseph's, Grey Lynn, will be attended during his holiday by the Very Rev. Dean Van Dyk, of the Maori Missions. Rev. Fathers McCarthy, Eccleton, and Vincent (Marist Missioners) will commence missions in the JRemuera, Parnell, and Northcote parishes on Sunday, April 8. The championship matches were finished, but the handicap matches will be played on Saturday, April 7 • the ladies at St. Mary's Club courts, Onehunga, and men's at Good Shepherd courts. The matches on April 2 were keenly contested and some very hard games resulted. Mrs. Ormond (mother of Monsignor Ormond, of St. Benedict's) is at present an inmate in the Mater Hospital, and her many friends are pleased to hear that the doctors' predict; a speedy recovery for her. ..

AUCKLAND CATHOLIC STUDENTS’ GUILD. The first formal meeting of the year was held at the Sacred Heart College on

Sunday, April 1. ' Rev. Brotherßorgia presided. U A most interesting paper entitled "Some Aspects of : Democracy" was read by Rev. Brother Osmond, B.Sc. His Lordship Dr. Liston thanked Rev.'Brother Osmond, on behalf of those present,.for his very able exposition of the Church's democratic teaching and organisation, and then proceeded to discuss certain points raised in the paper. Rev. Brother Borgia, B.A. and Mr. Coleman also contributed to the discussion. At the conclusion of the meeting the members proceeded to the College Chapel for Benediction. The next meeting of the guild will take place on the fourth Sunday in April, at the Bishop's Palace, New Street Ponsonby. . ' Tuakau This quiet little township near the Waikato, and some 36 miles from Auckland on the Main Trunk, can boast of having one of the finest churches in the Auckland diocese outside the big centres (writes a correspondent) The building, which is of brick, was completed in 1912 at a cost or £2OOO, and seats about 200. The altars of Oamarustone, and the beautiful life-sized statues are commented on favorably by visitors. Great credit is due to the-Rev. Fathers Keogh and Tiger and their devoted little congregation for their enthusiasm and confidence in the future of this district. The Rev. Father O'Malley is at present in charge 0 f the parish and a "working bee" meets every Saturday to put the presbytery grounds in order and in other ways to help their devoted pastor. Congregational singing has been introduced,"but on the great feasts High Mass is celebrated. On Easter Sunday the Mass of the Immaculate Conception" was artistically rendered by the students of the Marist Brothers' Juniorate, under the conductorshrp of Rev. Brother Fidelis. Master J. Scott, of the Juniorate, presided at the organ. Notwithstanding very bad weather there was a largo congregation. The altars were beautifully decorated. Rev. Father O'Malley preached on the Resurrection. He thanked the Brothers and their students for assisting in the choir and by their devotional music adding to the solemnity of the great Feast He also thanked the ladies who decorated the altars, the church committee, the working-bee, and all who helped him in any way since he came to the parish. As most of the congregation come considerable distances, Benediction or the Blessed Sacrament was given after Mass.
