THE HIBERNIAN SOCIETY.

, '..;..- ~ TO THE EDITOR. . Sir,The golden jubilee of the above society has come and gonethus marking an-important epoch in its history. Unquestionably the society has done much good in the past, both from a material and religious point of view, and can now look forward with confidence to a continued existence for. much more good in the community, Though myself an Hibernian ; of long ■standing,'" I have not had the opportunity for . many years to 'attend : : the meetings of J the Dunedin branch of which I am a member.^, has always

been a matter of regret to me*. Circumstance, however, permitted me to attend the recent jubilee function,-where I had the pleasure of meeting a number of ..the brethern I had had the happiness of knowing in former days. I was sorry to miss the face of one fine Hibernian,. namely, that of Bro. James O'Connor, a former secretary, now I regret to hear prostrated by illness. Bro. O'Connor was for many years a tower of strength to the branch especially in the earlier and more critical stages of' its existence; I trust that he will be soon restored to health. In conclusion, I hope that the weighty words which fell from the lips of the Rev. Fathers Delany and Foley will not fall on barren soil, but will bear fruit in the proper season and so enhance the membership of the branch until it embraces a large majority of the Catholic young men in the district. I am, etc., . J P. E., 2 / 4 /' 23 - ~ Port Chalmers.
