Answers to Correspondents

T. O’B., Slope Point. The Lawrence bazaar was held sometime ago. The winning ticket was held by a gentleman in the North Island. Further information should be sought from the parish priest of Lawrence.

Ignoramus. —As a rule we take no notice of queries like yours, sent in without name and address of inquirer. However we refer you to the Tablet a few weeks back for the information you require as to the attitude of the Church on Freemasonry. We cannot be publishing items of this kind everytime a- reader who does not read thinks of asking about them.

“Week-Ender.” —The law obliging us to hear Mass on Sunday under pain of grievous sin begins to bind from midnight on Saturday. Hence, to leave your parish and to go to a place where there is no Mass after midnight on Saturday is a violation of the Law. To go away for any reasonable cause before the obligation begins to bind excuses one from grievous sin. Hence a “week-ender” who, once in a while goes to such a place on Saturday does not actually violate the law, 1 but between avoiding grave sin and doing what sincere Christians ought to do there is a wide margin.

"Per S. M., Marten”.—We regret that we have no fund for the starving children of Europe and are therefore compelled to return your charitable offering.

Spooks. There are many good books on Spiritism. Mr. Godfrey Raupert, who was himself a spirtist, has written at least three very informing volumes. Recently there has appeared a'new volume by Father de Heredia, an American Jesuit. It is probably the best book that has been published up to date. He proves that spirit photos and ectoplasm and similar “proofs” which gulled Conan Doyle can all be faked, and has faked them himself in public halls.

To Several Contributors.— We are not dealing with the Tauranga election at any length. Beyond a brief editorial comment we have nothing to say to it as we are “off” politics just for the present. We appreciate the accounts of the ways and means by which Sir Joseph was defeated. Some of the information sent us reads too much like what is connoted by the old Irish saying: Buhhairt bean Horn go nduhhairt bean lei gurab bean in Ballinrode le poca in a lein.

Reader. —We answered your question before. The Tablet first appeared on May 3, 1873, so that our issue on May 3, this year will come out exactly .on the day of the paper’s Jubilee.

The Venerable Sister Terese

Clients of “The Little Flower” will be pleased to hear that the Sisters of the Sacred Heart Convent, Highgate Hill, W.A., have received from Lisieux a cable announcing that the beatification of the Yen. Sister Terese will take place on April 29. -
