DEATH OF ARCHBISHOP IRELAND

The death is announced by cable of the Most Rev. John Ireland, Archbishop of St. Paul, U.S.A. The deceased prelate, who ranked among the greatest of America’s Churchmen, was born at Burnchurch, Kilkenny, Ireland, on September 11, 1838 and was thus just eighty years of age. He came to St. Paul with his parents in 1852. Pie studied for the priesthood at Meximieux and Hycres, France, and on the completion of his college and seminary course was ordained to the priesthood at St. Paul, on December 21, 1861. A man marked out by his talents from the beginning, he passed through some of the most arduous campaigning of the Civil War as chaplain to the Fifth Minnesota Regiment. After 'a term of duty as Rector of the Cathedral, St. Paul, he was appointed titular Bishop of Maronea and Coadjutor to Bishop Grace of St. Paul, in whose Cathedral he received episcopal consecration, on December 21, 1875. Upon the resignation of his predecessor he became Bishop of St. Paul ; and on May 15, 1888, he was raised to the Metropolitan dignity as Archbishop of St. Paul.
