New Plymouth

A successful entertainment was given recently by the “Emerald Lights” Comedy Company (composed of Catholic performers) in aid of the “Irish Day” effort for the benefit of the lied Cross Society funds (writes a correspondent). The stage was effectively decorated with flags and ferns, which formed a pleasing background to the bright dresses of the company. The audience showed keen appreciation of all the individual items that went to form the varied and lengthy programme. In the first portion of the programme Messrs. Dwyer, Fahy, and Powell, in their speciality numbers, occasioned much merriment. Songs were contributed by Misses R. Whittle, J. Dennett, G. Hurley, and E. Young, and Mr. Trehey. A recitation, was well given by Miss Allen, and a French dance, and a song and dance by little Miss Fahy were much appreciated. Miss Bennett, besides accompanying, played two pianoforte selections very artistically. An amusing mock court was participated in by a large number. The singing of the National Anthem brought an enjoyable evening’s entertainment to a close. During the interval a beautifully-decorated basket of spring flowers was auctioned by Mr. Webster, and this was re-donated several times, and realised the sum of <£s 7s fid. Sweets and flowers sold during the evening augmented the total, and it is thought the Red Cross funds will benefit by about <£(3o as the result of the event. Much credit for the success of the enter-

tainmeni was due to the organising abilities and earnest work of Mr. Fahyi Messrs. E. ; Whittle, jun., and E. Hurley were joint secretaries.
