CHRISTCHURCH diocesan COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the diocesan executive was held on Tuesday, April 9, with a fair attendance of members. Information was received from Greymouth that the branch there had been re-formed and officers elected. Miss Crowley was' appointed to the position of secretary, and much enthusiasm was being displayed in enrolling members. Satisfactory progress was also being made with a branch at Runanga. An invitation was received from the Akaroa branch to attend their annual Federation function on Sunday, May 19, and it was decided that as many members as possible should be present. Messrs. W. Hayward and F. J. Doolan were elected the Federation representatives on the Board of Management of the Catholic Girls’ Hostel. The secretary reported having distributed 2300 copies of the Very Rev. Dean Regnault’s address on “The Aims and Objects of the Federation,” also a large number of reports of the business transacted at the Dominion Council meeting recently held in This city. The Federation Scholarship scheme was further discussed, but in view of the special.committee set up by the Dominion Executive to deal with the question, it was decided to await the findings of that committee. A donation of ,£3 was received from the Addington branch to the field service fund, and a very successful social was held at Darfield for the same purpose. Very strong comment was made on the action of the N.Z. Teachers’ Institute in suggesting the withdrawal of the scholarship grants to denominational schools (secondary). As this is an infringement of the policy of the Education Department, surprise was expressed that the servants of the Department should be allowed to dictate on its policy in ' this manner, Further action was left in the hands of the president and secretary. ,
