April 22. St. Matthew’s (ladies’) branch J1.A.C.8. Society met on Monday evening, April 15, at the Hibernian Hall, Sister E. Brophy, 8.P., presiding, a full roll of officers and a good number of members being present. Three candidates were ballotted for, elected, and duly initiated by the president, and one nomination for membership was received.. His Lordship the Bishop has returned from his visit to Auckland. Rev. Father S. Farragher, of Ormond, Auckland diocese, has been the guest of his Lordship the Bishop during the week. The annual swimming carnival of the Marist Brothers’ pupils was held in the Tepid Baths last Friday afternoon. There was a very good attendance of the parents and friends of the competitors, and who showed their appreciation of the sport provided. The entries this year were exceptionally large, and the close finishes proved in the majority of cases that the handicapping was all that could be desired. Seventeen events were got off in two and a half hours, a very commendable result. The director of the school (Brother Palladios) on behalf of the boys thanked those who had presented trophies, and also all who had in any way helped to make the carnival the great success it certainly was. On Wednesday evening last the euchre social organised by St. Matthew’s and St. Patrick’s branches of the 11.A.C.8. Society was held in the Hibernian Hall and well attended, a very enjoyable time being spent. The prize winners in euchre were Mrs. Bowden and Miss Rodgers, Messrs. J. Wally and M. Mannix. " J

The usual fortnightly meeting of St. Mary’s branch ILA.C.B. Society was held in Ozanam Lodge on Monday evening, April 15. B.P. .Bro. J. Ormandy presided. Accounts amounting to £9 16s Id were passed tor payment. The balance sheet for the quarter ended March 31 showed all the funds of (he branch to be in a satisfactory financial state. Bro. T. Y. Wai'staff was elected to the office of treasurer, rendered vacant by the resignation of Bro. W. Moir, who had gone o leside at Lyttelton. A motion of appreciation of the services rendered to the branch bv Bro. Moir was recorded. The secretary (Bro. Johnston) reported having received a letter from Dr. Ardagh—a life member of the branch and then on the Western frontconveying greetings to fellow-members and friends. _ B.P. Bro.
