Invercargill

(From our own correspondent.)

November 5.

On All Souls’ Day Masses were celebrated at 7,8, and 9 a.m., and a striking feature of the earlier Masses was the very large number who approached the Holy Table.

On Sunday the Rev. Father Woods celebrated the 11 o’clock Mass for the repose of the souls of those who have died at the war, particularly for the repose of the souls of those who were killed in the latest battle, of whom quite a number hailed from this parish. The celebrant in appropriate terms extended the sympathy of all to the bereaved one.s.

The secretary of the penny collection scheme, which was inaugurated by the Hibernians for the purposes of free education at the Marist Brothers’ School, supplies me with the following particulars : The first collection was made on July 8 last, so that up to the 28th ultimo seventeen collections have been made and a total of .£lOl 19s 9d collected, thus averaging £6 per Sunday, which must be considered highly satisfactory.

Next Sunday at all the Masses and at evening devotions the members of the Federation committee will be present to enrol members in the Catholic Federation. Parishioners are therefore earnestly requested to enrol in large numbers next Sunday. The subscription (Is per annum) is so nominal that every individual in the parish should become a member.

The ninth annual .meeting of St. Mary’s Tennis Club was held on the 15th ultimo. The Rev. Father Woods presided, and there was a large xxxxmber of members and prospective members present. The Very Rev. Dean Burke, V.F., is patron ; the Very Rev. Father O’Neill and Rev. Father Woods, vice-presidents of honor. Chiaroni, J. Butler, R. Waterston, T. Pound, J. Robertson, F. Loughnan, J. J. Furlong, J. Taylor, W. Baird, G. Martin, P. Casey, Ed. Sheehan, D. St. George, and J. Sheehan; secretary and treasurer, J. Barry; club captain, A. Wallace; auditor and delegate, Miss Kirwan; committee— Shepperd, Welsh, Kirwan, Timpany, Wells, Barry, Scully, and Short, and Messrs. Kelly. (2), Flannery, Prendergast, and Fogarty. The season was opened on Wednesday after-

noon last when there was a large number of players and spectators present, including the Very Rev. Father O Neill and Rev. -Father Woods, and Mrs. Timpany (president). Several enjoyable games were witnessed and the ladies handed round afternoon tea. The committee wish to thank the Dominican Nuns for supplying hot water, and for assisting in other directions, and so making the afternoon a most enjoyable one.
