Palmerston North

(From our own correspondent.) October 8. A sacred concert was given in the Palace Theatre on a recent Sunday evening- (arranged by Mrs. E. J. Leydon) under the auspices of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, the object being to provide Christmas comforts for the boys in the trenches. Long before 8 o'clock a large number had assembled awaiting admission. At ten minutes past eight every seat was occupied, and a large number .of late comers were turned away. The programme was of a very high standard, a notable feature being that all the lady contributors were expupils of the convent. The following numbers were given in the order stated:—Mrs. Bailey and Miss Mary lianlon, duet; Mr. T. J. Rogers, solo; Miss Agnes Segrief, A.T.C.L., L.A.8., solo; Mrs. E. L. Broad; solo, assisted by Mr. Maurice Cohen, violin obbligato; Mr. Foster (Wellington), solo, assisted by Mrs. Foster, 'cello obbligato : Mr. Zachariah (Wellington}, solo; Miss Kearns, solo; Mrs.- E. J. Leydon, solo. Also a trio by Mesdames Leydon, Broad, and Miss Segrief, and a chorus by Mesdames Broad, Bailey, Nash, Leydon and Misses Kearns and lianlon. The proceeds totalled £6O. Mr. Goring Johnston generously donated a cheque for £lO and Mrs. McMenamin (mother of the late Father McMenamin) a cheque for ,£5. His Worship the Mayor (Mr. J. A. Nash) thanked those present for their attendance, and also the ladies and gentlemen who provided such a splendid programme. He also spoke in glowing terms of the good work done by the Palmerston branch of the St. Vincent de Paxil's Society. Mr. Smith's orchestra rendered delightful music during the evening. The money has been cabled to the Rev. Father Segrief, who is oh active service. The society are indebted to Mr. H. Bennett, who very kindly placed the Palace Theatre at their disposal. -A. concert arranged by Nurse Blundell, under the auspices of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, was given on October 2 at the Awapuni Old People's Home. Those who contributed to the programme were Mesdames Leydon, Broad, Nash, and Brown. The Awapuni Camp Orchestra gave valued assistance. Tea was provided and a very pleasant afternoon was spent, the old people greatly appreciating the treat afforded them. Nurse Kilgour thanked the party for their thoughtfulness, and expressed the delight of all at the charming vocal and instrumental programme rendered. Preparations are well in hand for the bazaar to be held in Palmerston during Show Week in aid of the new memorial church funds. The bazaar will be held in Fuller's Skating Rink. A cordial welcome is extended to all the Catholic visitors to Palmerston during Show Week. A series of euchre socials have been held here during the winter in aid of the bazaar funds. They have all been a great success.
