DIOCESE OF AUCKLAND

(From our own correspondent.) March 9. The Marist Brothers' teaching staff of the Sacred Heart College deserve congratulations on the results of the past scholastic year. Three students of the collegeM. Reddington, M. J. Rogers, and M. O'Rorke —obtained the full pass of six subjects in the recent senior examination, while several ex-students have their names entered on the University roll—M. Flynn, M. J. Rogers, J. Woodly, and J. Molloy, in Auckland, and M. Reddington at Dunedin. In the course of an address to the men's Holy Family Confraternity last Tuesday evening the Rev. Father Murphy, Administrator, gave an interesting account of the mission of our Divine Lord whilst on earth. There was nothing in print (he said) of more absorbing interest than the life of Christ as narrated in.the Bible. It could be

profitably read, re-read, and studied to our intellectual advantage, and as the best means of acquiring a knowledge of sacred things. A bazaar organised by the iSisters of Mercy in aid of the 'St. Mary’s Convent building fund was opened in the Town Hall Concert Chamber last Wednesday evening. The Right Rev. Monsignor Mahoney, Y.G., Diocesan Administrator, made a brief introductory speech. Mrs. J. H. Gunson (Mayoress), in formally opening the bazaar, spoke of the difficulty of raising funds lor any purpose other than patriotic at the present time, but described the object of the bazaar—the raising of funds to defray the cost of erecting new science rooms at the conventas an important one, for the education and training-of girls at the present time was a work of national value. A chorus was given by a number of school children, and an exhibition of dancing by pupils of Miss Daphne Knight was much appreciated. The hall was prettily decorated, and brisk business was done at the various stalls and sideshows. A feature of the bazaar is the beautiful needlework done by the Sisters of Mercy. The stalls were in charge of the following:—Ponsonby and Grey Lynn, Miss Casey ; St. Patrick’s and St. Benedict’s, Mrs. Williams; Onehunga, Mrs. Kiely; refreshments, Mrs. Johnston. The bazaar, for which Miss Mcllhone and Mr. T. Holbrook were joint secretaries, was open for a week, and a special children’s afternoon was given on Saturday last.
