DISTRESS IN IRELAND

RIGHT REV. M. VERDON, D.D. (Bishop of Dunedin), Treasurer.

But more than hill or valley, bird or moor, More than the green fields of my river Suir, I loved those hapless ones, the Irish poor, All my life long. —Sir William Butler. Dublin is not dead ; her unconquerable heart beats warmly. Yet she is in sad straits, for a large part of the city has been laid waste, thousands of homes are in ruins, and much is needed to keep many of her people from going foodless, homeless, shelterless. The magnificent response of the past weeks shows that our appeal has reached the hearts of the Catholics of New Zealand, but we have no hesitation in asking for continued support. The poor of Dublin have suffered and are suffering now, and every sovereign, every shilling, will help to lighten the burdens of a long-tried people as well as enable us to pay our tribute of warm sympathy.
