DIOCESE OF DUNEDIN

A Triduum in preparation for the feast of St. Patrick begins this (Thursday) morning in St. Patrick’s Basilica, South Dunedin. A general Communion of the members of the Hibernian Society will,, take place at the 9 o’clock Mass on Sunday in St. Patrick’s Basilica, South Dunedin. After Mass the members will assemble in'the schoolroom for the annual breakfast. Rev. Father Tigar, 0.P., celebrated the 9 o’clock Mass at St. Joseph’s Cathedral on Sunday, and also delivered an impressive discourse. He also preached in the evening. Father Tigar left for the north on Tuesday. There will be Solemn High Mass at 11 o’clock on Sunday in St. Patrick’s Basilica, South Dunedin. His Lordship the Bishop will preside and preach the occasional discourse. The sermon in the evening will be by the Rev. Father Liston, Rector of Holy Cross College, Mosgiel. Rev. Father Creagh, C.SS.R., opened a ten days’ mission at Alexandra on Friday evening. A mission was begun at Port Chalmers on Sunday by the Rev. Father Murray, C.SS.R., who will conduct missions at St. Leonards and Waikouaiti next week. Rev. Father Lynch, C.SS.R., is still in the Gore parochial district, and Rev. Father Hunt, C.SS.R., in Queenstown, His Lordship the Bishop made a visitation of the Milton parish during the past week. On Thursday he administered the Sacrament of Confirmation to five at Kaitangata and to eight at Balclutha. On Friday he visited Owaka and confirmed nine. On Sunday his Lordship administered the Sacrament of Confirmation to fifty candidates at Milton. . Nearly the whole of the Catholics in the centres visited were present at their respective churches to meet his Lordship on his visit. The programme arranged for the St. Patrick’s Night concert in the Garrison Hall on March 18 is such as will undoubtedly draw a crowded house. The performers include the leading talent of the city, and their interpretation of the sweet and appealing music of Ireland is sure to meet with the warmest appreciation of the audience. Among the contributions to the programme will be ‘ Terence’s farewell ’ and ‘ Killarney ’ (Mrs. Power), Asthore’ and ‘ Kathleen Mavourneen ’ (Mrs. Hudson), ‘ The last glimpse of Erin’ (Miss D. Hall), ‘ The memory of the dead,’ and ‘ Countrymen awake’ (Mr. J. McGrath), Molly bawn ’ (Mr. Poppelwell), Irish song (Mr. Leech), and ‘ The dear little shamrock’ and ‘ Come back to Erin (Christian Brothers’ Choir). < S'" • , . . • v ■ , '
