Rev. Mother Mary Aubert

The stallholders and; others who assisted at the recent fete at the Home of Compussoon met on Wednesday (writes the Wellington correspondent of the ' Otago Daily Times ') and handed to Mother Mary Joseph Aubert a cheq-ue for over £500. The Rev. Mother, who at 83 is still energetic, is a Frencfoworrian of good family, and has devoted her whole life to helping the poor and needy. The Home of Compassion is .filled principally with decrepits and imbecile children, rescued in many cases from deplorable surroundings. The children are now" well looked after by the venerable Mother and the Sisterhood who work wut'b her, and some gleams of sunshine are thereby ibrought into their terribly sad) lives. A stroll through the wards with a medical man reveals some interesting but deplorable cases. One cannot help thinking that many of the poor little things would "be better out of the world, but as that cannot "be the visitor is pleased to see them so well cared for and so kindly treated. There is still a debt of £&000 on the home, and subscriptions from any part of the Dominion will be welcome in aid of the splendid work that as- being done. Among recent contributors are :— His Excellency the Governor, £10 10s ; Mr. C. P. Skerrett, K.C., £26 5s ; Sir Geo. Clifford, £25 . Miss Felix Campbell, £10 10s , Miss Maloney, £10 '; Hon. Kathleen Plunket, £5 ; Dr. Herbert, £3 3s ; D.1.C., £2 2s , • Ceneis, 1 £2', and Petone Railway Workshops,, £2.
