Obituary.

MB. PATRICK DOLAN, NORMANBY. It is with extreme regret (writes a Ilawera correspondent) I have to ohronicle the death of Mr Patrick Dolan, of Norman ny, Taranaki, which took place on the 25th of Augußt at his residence, after a painful illness. The late Mr Dolan, J.P., was a Dative of Leitrim, Ireland. About 40 years ago he left home for Queensland, where he remained only a Bhort time. He came to New Zealand in 1863, when he joined the police force in Hokitika. After leaving the force he settled in Taranaki, and joined the volunteers in 1868. The Maoris at that time being troublesome, Mr Dolan was present at several engagements, including Ohutuku, where he was wounded. Later on he joined the Armed Constabulary Force, and rose to the rank of sergeant. Mr Dolan, who was one of the oldest residents of the district, was also one of the most respected. In 1889 he married Miss Catherine Hall, younget-t daughter of the late Mr Jameß Hall, New Plymouth, and for some time organist of St. Joseph's, Hawera. Until a few weeks prior to his death, Mr Dolan was apparently in the best of health, but succumbed to a Berioua illneßs, although the best medical advice was obtained. In his illjjess he was attended by the Very Rev. Father Power and Rev. Father O'Shea, and died most peacefully, fortified by the rites of the Church. The funeral took place on August 27, a Requiem Mass being said at niae o'clock that morning. Mr Dolan leaves a widow

acd five young children to mourn the death of a good husband and devoted father. Mrs Dolan and her children have the sincere sympathy of many friends in the loss they have sustained. — R.I.P. MR. WILLIAM GLEESON, GREEN ISLAND. The unexpected death of Mr William Gleeson, of Green Island' which oconrred on September 27, came w- a great Bhock to his many friends. The deceased was, comparatively speaking: a young man, being only 44 years of age, and was in perfect health up to a few dayß before his demise. The immediate cause of death was congestion of the lungs, arising out of a severe attack of influenza. • The late Mr Gleeson waß born at Ballyverrigan near Youghal, County Cork, which he left about 26 years ago for this C lory. Soon after arriving in New Zealand he joined the Armed Constabulary, and later on the police force in which he served for a considerable time. About four and a half years ago he retired from the police foroe and purchased tbe Green Island Hotel, of which he was proprietor at the time of his death. As a police officer the deceased was highly esteemed both by his superiors and the general public, bringing to the discharge of his duties that ability and uprightness which gained for him universal respect. It is needless to say that during his residence at Green Island he was held in the highest esteem by all his neighbors. The relatives of the deceased have been farmers for generations in the district in which he was born, and one of his cousins is a well known authority and writer on the Gaelic language. About seven years ago the late Mr Gleeson was married to Miss Toomey, sister of Mr J. Toomey, Dunedin, and Messrs P. and F. Toomey, Waikouaiti, and Mrs O'Donnell, Maheno. During his illness he was attended by the clergy of the Cathedral and South Dunedin parishes, and died fortified by the rites of the Church. The remains were removed to St. Joseph's Cathedral on Tuesday morning, where a Requiem Mass was celebrated by the Rev. Father Murphy, Adm. The funeral, which was very largely attended, took place in the afternoon, the place of interment being the Southern Cemetery, where the Rev. Father Coffey officiated. Mrs Gleeson and relatives have the sincere sympathy of a large circle of friends in their bereavement/ —R.I.P.
