WESTPORT.

The Yen. Archpriest Walshe made reuewei application to *he Education Board for examination of St. Canice's School (says the Westport Times, June 2»). Mr. Bailie suppuited the application being acceded to, and said that it was a duty of the Board to ascertain whether the children sent to these schools are being properly educated. Mr. Lock opposed the application being granted, considering that private schools should not be encouraged, as not giving suoh good results as public schools, and moreover being inimical to the latter. Beside there was no evidence to show that the Inspector had more time this month than last when the request was refused on the ground that the Inspector's time would not allow it being done. Mr. Phillips supported Mr. Bailie strongly, contending that the Board was in charge of the education of all children in the district, and they should exercise the amount of supervision offered by the request. Mr. Beuke admitted the force of the arguments of Messrs. Bailie and Phillips, but considered that the matter should be left in the hands of the Inspectors, and if they were able to do »b requested they should have the approval of the Board if disposed to take up the work, they should be paid by the school authority. Mr. Franklyn said that the Board would go outside its duties in asking its Inspector to undertake such work. It was in a way subsidising denominational education. Mr. Bailie gave notice to move at the next meeting, that the request be referred to the Inspectors with the Board's approval if they elect to take up the work.
