BAZAAR AT MILTON.

(From an occasional correspondent.)

A bazaar was opened at St. George's Hall, Milton, on Thursday, 23rd inst., in aid of the local convent building fund. The Mayor (Mr. W. Moore), at the request of Very Rev. Father O'Neill, inaugurated the proceedings in a neat speech, after which some musical items consisting of songs and pianoforte selections were given by pupils of the Dominican Nuns. Miss Mary Morrison, of Danedin, gave great satisfaction by her vocal efforts, {and Miss Soanlan en* livened the proceedings by her musical contributions. Three fancy stalls made a very effective display of goods. No. 1 stall — at which the attendants were the Misses Boyle, O'Neill, Knott (2), Morrison, and Scanlan — contained, amongst a variety of useful needlework, a draught screen, in three panels, beautifully painted and mounted ; a bronze-framed painted mirror, some 6ft in height, on which were depicted birds of paradise, etc. ; a folding chair, artistically mounted ; some exquisite cushions, together with several articles in oarved wood, steel engravings, and a portrait of the late Mr Gladstone in oils. No. 2. stall was in charge of Mesdames Walsh, Moroney, and Scanlan, assisted by the Misses Lynch (2). Conspicuous in this stall were a Spanish lounge (Kensington embroidery), a lovely oil painting representing Preservation Inlet, several painted mirrors with a profusion of landscapes in oils, cushions, etc. At No. 3 stall Mrs. McTigue assisted by the Misses McTigue (2), Comber, and Culhane (2), were in charge. A large hand* painted mirror, representing swans gracefully disporting on a lagoon, and perfectly reflectel in the still water, was a striking feature of this stall ; a lady's chair, worked in arrasene, a few oil paintings of rural scenery, a plush folding chair, with painted and embroidered cushions, alabaster vases, etc., formed a very fine display. The refreshment stall was in charge of Mrs. Culhane. The attendants worked with a will, and at the close of the bazaar the entire stock was disposed of. The weather on the evenings of Thursday and Friday was cold, and the attendance was to some extent affected thereby. On Saturday night the hall was densely crowded, and the efforts of the ladies were well seconded by a number of gentlemen, notably by Mr. Donald Reid, whose exertions kept business pretty brisk till close on midnight. An extended night being necessary in order to dispose of all the artioles, it was decided to keep open on Monday, when an auction sale wound up the proceedings. The financial result was satisfactory, the takings of the bazaar bringing the Convent building fund up to £305. At the close of the sale Father O'Neill, on behalf of the nuns and on his own account, thanked all who had helped in the good work.

The Government have decided to establish an institution for the training of cadets in veterinary work. An influential meeting of parishioners of St. Mary's, Mancheater street (writes our Christchurch correspondent), was held in the presbytery, on Sunday afternoon, to consider the question of erecting a new parochial residence. In the absence of Sir George Clifford, the chair was occupied by Mr. M. Donnelly. Sir CX Clifford wrote apologising fur unavoidable absence, and promising a donation of £50 to the building fund. Representatives from Hornby, Papanui, and other outlying districts were amongst those present. Resolutions were adopted affirming the desirability of proceeding with the work. A subscription list was opened in the room, and promises of £300 received. A strong committee was formed to canvass for further contributions. A general desire seemed to be entertained of having the proposed structure in brick, bat decision in this regard was deferred.
