(From our Waimate correspondent.)

A fitting close was given to the celebration of the centenary of 1 798 by the entertainment given to the children of the Convent School on Monday, the 15th inst. Tables were laid along the whole length of the schoolroom at which a substantial luncheon was served to the ohildren. Afterwards a musical programme was gone through, to which Miss Morrison, Messrs. J. and R. Peterson, and Rev. Father O'Connell kindly contributed. Several national choruses were also very well rendered by the school children. It is a most pleasing feature of the whole celebration in Waimate that nothing but pleasant feeling has been evoked by it, and that it was the means of giving to all a lesson in Irish history in a way to which no possible exception could be taken.

At the Waihao, on Monday, all the Catholic residents turned out in force to take part in the planting and decoration of the church grounds. Some 600 trees were planted, and the whole surroundings renovated, bo that in a short time the pretty church will be a pleasant feature in the landscape.
