RAILWAY RETURNS.

The return of railway receipts and expenditure for the four weeks ending March 5 t-hows the former to have been L 118,075 Us lOd and the latter L'iG,lO4 3d 3d. In the corrspon ling period of the prievious year the figures were H 10,683 7s 3d and L 60,975 7s Id respectively. Of tne revenue, the North Island lines contributed L 47.169 3s 4i as against L 40.612 12s Id ; and the South Island lines L 70,901 8s (id, as agfiinst L 69.970 15s 2d. The North Island lines absorbed L27.2G0 0s 2d, as against L 21,837 4s 3d ; and the South Island lines L38,8(4 3s Id, as against L 39.138 2s lOd. The proportion of expenses to revenue on the several lines, calculated on an annual average, for the respective periods of 1398-97. was as follows : — North Island — Kawakawa, 132 18, 109 09 ; Whangarei. 70-77, 8(51)3 ; Kaihu, 4324, 43-11); Auckland, 64-20, 64 02; Wellington-Napier-New Plymouth, 68*50, 62-20. South Island— Hurunui-P.luff, GO\SI, 59 33; Greymouth-Brunner, 50-70. 56-63; Greymouth-Hnkitika, (!2-(il, 51-38; Westporb, 4 1 -(54, 45-83 ; Nelson, 93-38, <JO-99 : Picton. 114-13. 10711 ;— grand total, 62-80, 60-62. The receipts on the Hurunui-Bluff section were L 62.835 8s 9d, as compared with L 62,770 Uh (5i for the corresponding period of last year.
