THE CONVENT SCHOOLS, ASHBURTON.

On Thursday (says the A.shburton Mad) there was a large attendance at the convent school to enjoy the annual entertainment given by the pupils at the close of the school year, and just before the Christmas holidays. As u&ual, the numbers of the programme were well selected, every item being the work of a master, 'and the performance of the pupils showed how careful and thorough had been the teaching. Iv the concerted work evidence was given of how inexorable the teachers are in the matter of musical time, which was kept with the precision of a metronome, while the expressive tinging and playing bore marks throughout of honest endeavours to train the musical instincts of the pupils to realise the spirit and meaning of the composer. The time of the pieces for three pianos with organ (seven players) was admirable, and there were three of such pieces, with iroh playeis every time. In the part songs, which were sweetly sung, the solos were taken by Miss Beatrice Denshire, whose work was specially pleasing, and gave promise of rivalling in the near future that of her gifted mother The iolin playing of Misses Digby and J. Brick was also commendable, and as an elocutionary effort JUis-b V. Johnston's recitation left little to be desired.
