The A'oys'an Society I eld a very interesting and amusing mcc iog on Tuesday last. Amongst those present were the Very Rev Dr Egan* 0.8.8.,0f A lekian 1, Fathers Lewis and Tabman. The business of the evening was the reading of the j )Urnal. " Aloyeian Chronicle." The contributions to the journal were many and various, written on interesting subjects and in such good taste that criticism was to a certain ex'ent disarmed. Songs were nicely rendered by Messrs P. Cairns and W. Qiirk, and Mr R. Qui' n, in his i' i'ial i ffort at a comic recit*'ior, mid* a decided hi', Mr Dennehy recited " Fontenoy," after which the meeting terminated with three heaity cheers for the distinguished visitor, the Very Rev Dr Ega-. On Tnursilay evening a grand concert, givea for the purpose of forming a nucleus of a fund for ro fi ig and improving the church, was held in the boys' Fcicolroorn. Miss McGuinness gave a splendid rendering of •Whisper, and 1 sh^li hear,' the flite obligato by the rev gentleman adding much to the pleasures of it. The next item will long be remembered by the large audience — a reading by Dr Etran entitled ' The Roman Gui le.' Great fun wa3 ex'racted out of it — the inquisitive globe-trotter and the answers ?o his numerous questions by 1 3 guide, who OLce falling away from hia pairo'-'.ke fatter as to what this bust ie, or tbiL mummy was, gut hopelessly co fu^od, being splendidly pourtrajed. The sopgs ' Eternal Re-t,' by Miss McKenna, and ' lhe LongshoremaD,' by Mr McKenna, were boih well rendered, the latter bemg encond ; hnd the firbt part of iLe ccn:ert was brought to a close wit b at rtn>ienng of ' Futher O'Flyun ' heard in T-maru sinc3 the day Mr Densem so ably iatioduced it, Enunciation, gesture, and rendition weie alike exce'lent, and thuugh Graves' 'emerald' has often suffered at the lips of numerous ama'eurß, last nighl'sieadering by the lips of a genuine Iris! man completely charmed toe numerous listeners. Of c ur&e, in the circumstance?, tbe rev gentleman had to reappear, and he gave a very piquant rendering of ' I'm not myself at all. 1 Iv the eecoad part all the ladies and gentlemen named above reappeared, with the id iition cf Mr il. F. D^nnehy, who, as a recitation, gave Knowles' s tt ing of ' TelVs AJdrts?,' and created a most favour .ble lmpTcssioD. Mies B. M;Guinness was throughout a very efficient accompanist, and waa ably assis ed by Dr Egin on the flute, which was at no time ovi rbiowrj. The cancert was a thorough Bucceas in every way and will bj long remsmtered by these who had the greit pleasure of listening 'o it." Dr Eean is the guest of Father Lewis and leaves during the week for his own diocese. Dr Grimes is announcsd to be in Timaru on Sunday, June 7tb, to administer the fc'acrament of Confirmation.
