Mb. Donald Stkonach (on behalf of the New Zealaod Loan aud Mercantile Agency Company, Limited) reports for the week endine Septe-ber 21, as follows :— s Fat Cattle.— 226 head were yarded at Burnside for this day's market, representing all qualities. Competition for best quality was fairly biisk, but for ordinary the demmd was easier and prices irregular. Best bullocks brousrht £7 17s 6d to £9 17s 6d ■ one pen £10 7s 6d ; ordinary. £5 to £7 10s ; cows in proportion. ' Fat Sheep.— 2 873 were penned. Of these, about 700 were merinos fair to good ; the balance crossbreds, chiefly wethers, all good to prime quality. There was a good attendance of the trade, who competed moderately well for ordinary, but, in the absence of the usual demand for export, prime quality was rather easier, and no improvement on last week's. Best crossbred wethers brought 12s 6d to 14s 3d ; medium to good, 9s 6d to 12s ; best ao ewes, 10s to 13s 6d • ordinary, 9s to 93 6d ; merino withers, 8s to 9a 9d. We sold on account of Mr. J. Macara (Chattan) crossbred wethers at 13 3 3d to Hs 3d ; Mr. G. Milne, do do at 12s 3d to 13s ; Messrs. S. and J Taylor (Wairuna), do do at 10s 9d to 11s. Fat Lambs.— 6s were peined, which sold at 6a to 13s 6d Pigs.— 239 were penred. The demand for baconers was easier and prices lower, while light stores and porkers sold well. Suckers brought 6s to 10s; light stores 12s to 20s; porkers, 22s to 31sbaconers, 32s to 49s ; a few heavy weights from 50 to 60s. ' Store Cattle.— Since the date of our last report the'market has been quiet. Some inquiry is being made, but bufiness resulting at present is unimportant. We look forward, however, to a good demand springing up in a month or so for cattle fit for paddock fattening. F _ Store Sheep.— The market is without alteration, ani no transtetions of any consequence have transpired during the week. We do not anticipate very much business in this direction till shearing Hides.— We have no alteration to note in the state of the market Shippers are indisposed to operate even at the present low pncee The business done is chiefly confined to the operations of local manufaftnrers at the following quotations .-—For inferior and bulls' lid to 2d|; light, 2£d to 2§i ; medium, 2f dto 3.jd ; heavy, 3 a M to "3*d ; extra choice lots a shado more, with theusual allowance in weight for offals, cheeks, and shanks. Tallow.— A good demand for local requirements continues to exist, but owing to the depressing tone of the London market ihippers are not mcline<l to operate to any extent. The arrivals into ■tore, however, are limited and readily placed at the following quotations, viz., for inferior and mixed, 10s to 12s ; medium tc good 13s to 15s j best mutton, 16s to 17s 6d ; rough fat, inferior, 6s to 8s : medium tc good, 9s to 10s ; caul fat, properly saved, 11s to 11s 6d per cwt. Sheepskins.— The attendance at our weekly sale on Monday was large, nearly all the lepresentatives of the trade being present when we offered a full catalogue, representing the usual varied descriptions coming to hand, viz., country dry and town butchers' green skins Competition was fairly active, but no doubt owing to the reports of the progress of the London wocl sales, which are hardly so satisfactory as could be desired, prices realised to-day seemed to be more in favour of buyers. A few picked lois realised up to last week's rates while on nn average prices were hardly so good. Country dry cros°breds, low to medium, brought 9d to 3s ; good to best, 3s 6d to 5s 6d • dry merinos, low to medium, 8d to 2s 2d ; good to best, 2s 6d to 4i 2d ; dry pelts, 3i to 7d ; butchers' green cross breds, 3s 2d, 3s 5d 3s Bd, 383 8 lid. 4s 2d, 4s 6d, 4s 6d, 4s 7d ; do do merino, 2s 9d, 3s Id, Bs4d, 3s 6d. 3s9d, 3s lid. Rabbitskins. — Cablegrams to hand reporting the position of the London market at the public sales, which were held on Friday, the 16th inst, are rather disappointing prices having receded 10 to 15 per cent., equalling 3d to 5d per lb. The trade had not much hope of seeing late prices realised at the next sales, but were hardly prepared for such a fall at last week's sales, considering the moderate a u riT £_L to date On onda y wo offeied a moderate catalogue, all th« traywi being in attendance. Competition ma fairly Retire, but

prces for best skins were lower by 3d to 6d per lb, realising from Is 3 ( to Is 5d ; medium to good, lOd to Is 2d ; inferior, 8i to 9i ; suckers, ■§■ i to 2£dper lb. Gn.in. — Wneat : There is no improvement in the tone of the market j the only business done, at about equil to late rates, is in good TuHcan and red straw, and then to a very small ex'ent, millers purchasing sparingly for mixing purposes. Gmd while velvet is saleable, but only at a considerable re lucdon- We quote prime milling, red straw, and Tuscan, 4s to 4s 3d ; best white velvet, 3-< 9d To 3s lOd ; medium to good, 3s 8 1 to 3s 9d ; inferior, 3s 3d to 3. 7.1 (ex store, ba?s weighed in). — Oats : A moderate demand is < xperiPticed for shipment, chiefly for full, bright sorts. Decoloured aie also moving off slowly, but prices do not show any improvement. According to present appearances the indications are not favourable ; at the same time, prices are not likely to further recede. We quote prime milling. Is 8d to Is 8^1; best bright short feed, la 7£l to Is 8d ; medium Is6d to Is 7d ; Danish are difficult to place, but good long tartars are occasionally disposed of in small lots for seed at Is 9d to to 2s fex store bags weighed in) —Barley : Tb6 market is . xceedi.igly quiet, maiuly owing to the w-int of supplies, but the demand is not over brisk ; quotations are nominal. Rye-grass Seed. — The market continues exceptionally quiet for the season. Beyond small lots disposed of by seedsmen, there is very little of any importance passing, more especially in provincial grown . Poverty Bay seed has the preference, when prices suit. Cock-foot is in moderate demand, but only firsr-class seed, thoroughly clean, at 4|d to 5d ; second class is difficult to place at 3Ji to 4£ i per lb. Potatoes. — There is no improvement in either demaud or value.
