The general election in France has resulted in a large gain in the provinces to the Conservatives, an immense number of persons having voted. The returns for Paris are not completed.
Advices are to hand from the officer who is directing the operations of the Abyssinian bands against the rebel Arabs between Massowah and Kassala. He reports that he has fought an engagement with a large force of Hadendowahs, and that he was successful in defeating the enemy, who suffered considerable loss in killed and wounded.
M. AbsokofE avers that Austria and Russia have arranged to replace Prince Alexander in the spring by a Russian vassal, Russia at the same time absorbing Roumelia, and Austria annexing Bosnia and Herzegovina. Prince Alexander will endeavour to forestall this plot. Russia insists on his deposition or compensation in the form of command of the Bosphorus. Germany is favourable to Prince Alexander's deposition, while England opposes it. The relations between Austria and Russia are strained. Austiia has withdrawn her support from Seivia.
