Auckland. — 19th ultimo, for false pretences—(l) J. .Harrold, age about thirty-seven, height 5 ft. 6 in., probably native of New Zealand, good build, tanned complexion, brown hair, face slightly pitted, sharp features; well dressed; good appearance. (2) Man .(name unknown), age about forty, height about 5 ft. 6 m., stout build, full face ; well dressed. They obtained a cheque for £4B and £5 in money from Percy Sawyer.. dealer, 4 Hobson ' Street, by falsely representing that they had three tons of old metal for sale, which was on a ship at King’s Wharf, but they could not give immediate delivery as the winches were not working. It was agreed that delivery be made next day. The second man called on complainant next morning and asked him to accompany him to get the metal. While on the way he asked complainant for 10s. with which to purchase liquor for the crew of the ship. On receiving it he left, but did not return. On the 20th ultimo, the cheque for £4B was cashed with Milne and Choyce, Ltd., by two men who each purchased a light-grey felt hat, branded “ Royal Zephyr ” and “ Milne and Choyce, Queen Street,” one size 7 and the other slightly smaller. “ Harrold ” is believed to be identical with Leonard Stanley Dunford, referred to in Police Gazette, 1542," page 693, and Photographs, 1932, page 83. He obtained £3 in money from John Thomas, 20 Havelock Street, by falsely w stating his name was Keith Jefferson of f the Royal New S Zealand Air Force, that he had just returned from New Guinea, and had lost his wallet and contents. He is alleged to have committed similar offences. No warrant.
