PERSONS WANTED.

Queen Street Wharf (Auckland). —28th ultimo, on warrant for deserting from his ship, James Norton, age twenty-eight, height 5 ft. 10 in., seaman, native of England, medium build, fresh complexion, dark hair, “ M.N. 1939 ” on left forearm ; dressed in a navy-blue suit.

Auckland. —12th March last, on warrant of commitment to Auckland Prison for one month in default of complying with the terms of a maintenance order for the. support of his wife, Eliza Knight, Joseph Francis Knight, age fifty-nine, height 5 ft. 7 in., butcher, native of New Zealand, strong build, dark complexion, black hair turning grey, blue eyes, scar on left forearm, left middle finger stiff. The warrant is not to be executed if h{>iSa member of the Armed Forces within the jrfeaning of the Arrest (Armed Forces) Emergency Regulations. (See Police Gazette, 1931, page 570.)

Auckland. 22nd ultimo, on warrant for a breach of his probation (Offenders Probation Act, 1920), Maurice Harry Church, referred to in Police Gazette, 1940, page 550. He may endeavour to leave this Dominion.

His wife recently secured a divorce and he is now liable for enrolment in the First Division of the General Reserve. Tuakau. — 16th ultimo, that he may be located and interviewed regarding his having unlawfully converted to his own use a horse, saddle, and bridle (recovered), value, £lB, the property of Otta James Lindberg, farmer, Pukekawa, David Craigie, age seventeen, height 5 ft. 7 in., farm labourer, native of New Zealand, good build, freckled complexion, brown hair, blue-grey eyes; wearing green sports clothes or dirty navy-blue suit. He was licensed out to complainant but he absconded on the 16th ultimo during his employer’s absence taking the property described above with him. The horse, saddle, and bridle were later recovered at Mercer.

Te Awamutu. lst instant, for false pretences, Man (name unknown), age about thirty-five, height about 5 ft. 10 in., medium build, fresh complexion, brown hair, blue or grey eyes, teeth said to be bridged; may be dressed in the suit described below. Accused obtained £5 12s. 6d. cash and a navy-blue suit with dark royal and white stripes about § in. apart from Henry Archibald Burchell, men’s outfitter, Alexandra Street, by means of a valueless cheque for £ll 10s., drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, To Awamutu, by C. M. Been in favour of P. Scott, dated Ist May, 1941. The cheque is from a book containing cheques Nos. B. 607657 to B. 607680, which was stolen from George Angus, Te Awamutu. Other cheques from this book have been issued in favour of P. Scott and T. Clark, and each signed C. M. Deen. No warrant. ' , .

Gisborne. 24th ultimo, on warrant to apprehend for failing to maintain his wife, Lily May Whitehead, and three children, Clarence Stephen Whitehead, age thirty-six, height 6 ft. 2 in., labourer and sawmill hand, native of New Zealand, thin build, fair complexion, light-brown hair, grey eyes, slightly round shoulders; dressed in a light-blue sports coat and brown trousers ; seldom wears a hat; slouching gait; frequents hotels. He is a first-class axeman, and may be found competing at agricultural shows or carnivals.

New Plymouth. 24th January last, for false pretences, P. Burns (name probably fictitious), age about thirty-one, height about 5 ft. 9 in., strong build, black hair; wearing battle dress of a private. Accused obtained £6 17s. cash from Albert Musgrave Purser, furnisher, Devon Street, by means of a valueless cheque for £ls 125., drawn on the Union Bank of Australia, Wellington (altered from New Plymouth to Wellington), in favour of P. Burns or “ order,” signed “ S. Hart ” and endorsed “ P. Burns,” which he tendered in payment for a pram. The photograph of Herbert Leah Paterson, referred to in Police Gazette, 1941, page 358, and Photographs, 1932, page 86, has been identified as that of accused who was accompanied by Mrs. Hannah Barbara Muir (nee Thomas), referred to in Police Gazette, 1941, page 325, and while in New Plymouth she was using the name Barbara Thomas. The cheque-form was obtained from Michael Novak, fishmonger, by a woman whose description is identical with that of the woman who was with Burns in Purser’s shop. No warrant.

Foxton. —Ist instant, on warrant for false pretences, H. A. Clayton. He was dressed in a blue serge suit and grey overcoat. Accused obtained the goods described below and £5 ss. Bd. cash from George Frederick William Smith, men’s outfitter, Main Street, by means of a valueless cheque for £lB, No. A. 043674, drawn on the Bank of New South Wales, Taumarunui, signed “ H. A. Clayton,” and dated Ist May, 1941. Description: A fibre attache-case a blue serge suit; an overcoat; two handkerchiefs; two shirts; pyjamas two pairs of socks ; a hat; and a pair of shoes. He booked in at the Foxton Hotel, but after having his dinner he disappeared without paying for it. The photograph of Harold Avery Clayton, referred to in Police Gazette, 1940, page 751, and Photographs, 1931, page 14, has been identified as that o, “ cused - VV*"-

Petone. —7th instant, on warrant to apprehend for failing to maintain his wife, Lorna Body, and child, 35 Richmond Street, William Henry Body, age thirty-two, height 5 ft. 8 in., painter, native of New Zealand, thin build, pale complexion, dark hair, blue eyes; usually well dressed; fond- of liquor and yachting. His photograph is filed. He may assume the names Taylor or Messenger.

Wellington. —l7th November last, that a summons may be served on him for being found on the licensed premises of the Wellington Hotel during prohibited hours, Alan Brown, age about forty-five, height 5 ft. 11 in., farm labourer, strong build, fresh complexion; dressed in a dark suit and light-grey felt hat.

Wellington. December last, on warrant for false pretences, L. H. Wilson, age about forty-five, height about 5 ft. 6 in., clerk, native of New Zealand, strong build, tanned complexion, dark hair; dressed in a dark-brown suit and soft felt hat; neat appearance ; speaks quietly. He obtained £2 cash from Richard Timmins, manager of Cambridge Hotel, by means of a valueless cheque for that amount drawn on the Commercial Bank of Australia, Wellington, signed L. H. Wilson. The cheque was from the chequebook of Charles Alfred Livingstone who lost it in November last. Accused committed two other similar offences (with cheques from the same book) one in the city and the other in Petone, and in these transactions he used the names George Lindsay and G. H. Lambert. Informations have been laid regarding these latter offences.

Wellington. —4th instant, on warrant for deserting from their ship—ll J. Ward-age twenty-seven, height 5 ft. 7 in., fireman, alive England, slight build, sallow complexion, curly brown hair,- grey eyes. (2) D. Siassor, age nineteen, height 5 ft. in., assistant cook, native of England, strong build, fresh complexion, dark-brown hair, brown eyes. (31 C. Oates, age twenty-seven, height 5 ft. 10 in., assistant steward, native of England, medium build, swarthy complexion, black hair, dark-brown eyes.

Wellington. —sth instant, on warrant for that on the 4th ultimo, not being a person exempted by the Licensing Act from requiring a license to sell liquor, and not being licensed to sell same, did sell beer, Eric Doull, referred to in Police Gazette, 1940, page 583.

Dunedin. —lßth ultimo, on warrant to apprehend for failing to comply with the terms of a maintenance order for the support of his wife, Edna May Leppingwell, 54 Russell Street, Alfred Ernest Leppingwell, age twenty-seven, height 5 ft. 8 in., painter and paperhanger, native of New Zealand, medium build, fair complexion, light-brown hair, blue eyes, brown mark above one eye; usually dressed in sports clothes; has a slight twist in upper lip when smiling. Arrears to 3rd March last, £132 12s. sd. He is to be brought before the Court nearest to place of arrest.

Dunedin. instant, on warrant to apprehend for failing to maintain his wife, Ethel Rose Lawson, Wilfred John Lawson, age forty-five, height 5 ft. 8 in., labourer, native of New Zealand,. medium build, fresh complexion, dark hair turning grey, brown eyes, woman on right forearm ; frequents billiard-saloons and race-meetings.
