PERSONS WANTED.

Auckland. —On. or about the 14th September last, for theft of a cheque for £23 11s. 9d., the property of the Amalgamated Theatres, Ltd., and also forgery of the cheque, Man (name unknown), age about twenty-seven, height 5 ft. 9 in., medium build, fresh complexion, dark hair, good teeth. The above-mentioned cheque was forwarded by post by Amalgamated Theatres, Ltd., in an envelope addressed “W. Goodfellow, C/o Amalgamated Dairies, Ltd., Anzac Avenue, Auckland,” but it did not reach the addressee. On the 16th September last the man described purchased goods, value 155., at the shop of the Farmers’ Trading Co., Otahuhu, and in payment therefor he tendered the cheque which had been endorsed “W. Goodfellow,” receiving £22 16s. 9d. in change. On the day preceding this transaction the following described Hindu attempted to have the cheque cashed by the Robinson Loan and Finance Co., Hobson Street: Age about forty, height about 5 ft. 6 in., strong build, dark complexion, hair, and eyes, small moustache, sharp features. Auckland. lst October last, that two summonses for breaches of the Licensing Act may be served on him, Arthur Lauchlan Grant, age about twenty-eight, height 6 ft., labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, fair complexion, brown hair; dressed in a light-grey sports suit, and black boots (no hat.)

Hastings. 2lst ultimo, on warrant for false pretences, Hester Kenneth Claud® Hodges, referred to in Police Gazette, 1938, page 627, and Photographs, 1923, page 48. Accused obtained £l3 11s. from Stewart Nesbitt, licensee of the Stortford Lodge Hotel, by means of a valueless cheque for that amount on the Bank of Australia, Napier, dated 30th November, 1938, and signed T. H. Lowry. Accused who was employed as a cook on Thomas Henry Lowry’s station at Okawa, was given on the 2nd ultimo a cheque for £l3 11s. being his wages due. Later Mr. Lowry stopped payment of this cheque and gave Hodges a second cheque, as accused said he had lost the first one. This statement was evidently not true as he subsequently had it cashed at the Stortford Lodg6Hotel ' AtontrfW ti/Z/*?.

Hunterville. l9th October last, on warrant of commitment to Palmerston North Prison for fourteen days in default of paying £3 ss. fines and costs for (1) driving a motor-cycle without a side-car and carrying thereon more than two persons, and (2) failing to carry warrant of fitness, Stanley Matthews, age twenty-two, height 5 ft. 7 in., motor mechanic, native of New Zealand, medium build, fair complexion and hair, blue eyes. Wanganui. On or about the 24th October last, for forgery and uttering, Man (name unknown). Accused forged the signature of R. Collier to a cheque for £5 10s. drawn on the Bank of Australasia, Taihape, and uttered it to Wong Jang, fruiterer, Hautapu Street, Taihape, in payment of 2s. for fruit, receiving £5 Bs. in change. He may be identical with Richard Alexander Henry Malam, age thirty-eight, height 5 ft. 8f in., labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, fresh complexion, dark hair, brown eyes, scar on top of head, three scars on left dressed in a navy-blue suit and navy-blue was from the chequebook of /7^!ymvrlsen, fife (nub op /p t 1 ietjress ; Taihape. It has been ascertained Huft Malam, at request, obtained the cheque-book for her Kora the bank on the 12th October last, and the writing on the cheque resembles his handwriting. When he is located an urgent communication is to be sent to the Inspector of Police, Wanganui, who will forward the file. No warrant. Palmerston North. 2Bth ultimo, on warrant for forgery, Percy Palmer, alias Harry Page, age about twenty-five, height 5 ft. 6 in., slight build, tanned ruddy complexion, dark hair, dressed in a da*k suit, grey tweed overcoat, and slate-grey felt hat. On the 28th ultimo, at Feilding, he caused to be forwarded a money-order telegram for lbs. signed Percy Palmer to Harry Page, Palmerston North. At Palmerston North Post Office he signed for and was given the order which he later altered to read “ twelve pounds fifteen shillings,” and tendered it to Imilda Hoare, wife of the licensee, Grand Hotel, in payment for his board and lodging to 31st ultimo, receiving £lO Bs. in change. He did not stay at the hotel as arranged, but disappeared after receiving the money. He is identical with Harry Koley, alias Percy Conway, referred to in Police Gazette, 1938, page 164, and he may be identical with William Corby, alias Bert Moore, referred to in Police Gazette, 1938, page 520.

On the 23rd ultimo a Jfljyi who is probably identical with accused committed three similar offences at Hastings, re- • ceiving from various firms goods of a total value of £9 ss. 6d., and cash to the amount of £25 13s. 6d. Palmerston North. sth November last, on warrant for being a rogue and vagabond in that he imposed verbally on a charitable private individual, to wit, John Carville Young, by falsely representing that he required money to enable him to reach Lyttelton where, he said, he could get a position on the ship “ Doric Star,” William Thomson, alias Cameron, referred to in Police Gazette, 1938, page 548, and Photographs, 1931, page 25. Complainant who was motoring from Hawera to Palmerston North gave accused a lift, and the latter, by means of the false representation referred to, obtained £3 from Young.

Greymoutii. —On or about the 30th September last, on warrant for theft of £42 Bs. 10d., the property of the Point Elizabeth and Liverpool State Collieries Industrial Union of Workers, William Pendlsbury, referred to in Police Gazette, 1938, pages 683 and 703. He is a pipe-smoker, has good teeth, is usually well dressed in a brown suit with hat to match, and heavy grey check overcoat, and wears a curb watch-chain with small pendant in middle, across chest; speaks well and briskly, and he has a quick gait; a heavy drinker, and when intoxicated he has a sneering manner. His photograph is filed. He worked in the coal-mine, and also held the position of secretary to the above-mentioned union for five years. After he disappeared about the sth October last the discovery was made that the sum of £42 Bs. lOd. was missing. There are other similar charges pending. ABBEsted. ffofeq
