SPECIAL NOTICE.

Theft from Ship “ Rangitata.” Auckland. Between about 3 p.m. on the 9th ultimo and 10 a.m. on the 13th, the sum of about £1,600, the property of the New Zealand Shipping Co., was stolen from a safe in the captain’s cabin on the ship “ Rangitata ” which was berthed at Auckland. The safe was apparently opened with a key. The captain was absent from the ship from the 9th to the 11th ultimo, and shortly after returning he discovered a small flat Canadian Nicholson file in his cabin probably left there by the offender, and it was also discovered that a white serviette with “ N.Z.S. Coy.” worked in flag on it was missing. Some of the stolen money is described as follows : Five Bank of England £lO notes, old issue; about £375 in Bank of England £5 notes, old issue; five hundred Bank of England £1 Treasury notes, three hundred of which had not been used ; two hundred 10s. notes drawn on the Treasury Bank, England; and about £350 in travellers’ cheques, drawn on Cook’s, Lloyd’s, Midland, Westminster, Barclay’s, Australian, and other banks, some payable to the New Zealand Shipping Co., denominations are £lO, £5, and £2, not negotiable ; and about £ls in English silver.
