INQUIRIES, ETC., FROM OUTSIDE NEW ZEALAND.
Johannesburgh (South Africa). —A warrant has been issued at Pretoria on the 3rd November last for the arrest of Walter Young Jardine for embezzlement (large sum involved). Description: Age forty-two, height sft. 10 in., grey hair, native of England, fairly heavy grey moustache, blue eyes, slight build, sharp features, thin face, fairly goodlooking ; military appearance ; snake tattooed on one arm, ring on one finger, and several other tattoo-marks on both arms. He owned racehorses, and used to tide in gymkhanas. He was last seen in Johannesburg on the 15th October, 1910, when he is supposed to have left with his wife and two children (girl aged seven years and boy aged
two years) for Natal or Bloemfontein. He was a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Berkshire, and left the regiment at Ladysmith in 1899 to take up the position of Sergt.-major in the 1.L.H., in which corps he obtained a commission. Since the late Boer war he has served in the 1.L.H., S.A.L.H., and was Major and Adjutant of the Northern Mounted Rifles (Transvaal Volunteers). He is well-known to officers of regiments in India who served in South Africa. He is a son of the late Captain R. Jardine of the Indian Army, and may endeavour to leave South Africa for India or New Zealand. Photograph and specimen of handwriting filed in the Commissioner’s Office, Wellington.
