(See Police Gazette, 1903, page 151.) Kawhia.— Alexander Gavin charged with default of fine for a breach of the Gaming and Lotteries Act, has paid the amount due.

Ormond ville. Patrick A. Shand is charged on warrant with false pretences on Carl Frederick Fredericksen, storekeeper, on the 7th instant. Description: Supposed colonial, labourer, about twenty-nine years of age, about 5 ft. 6 in. high, stiff build, fresh freckled complexion, red hair, and moustache only, head well set back, gold ring on both little fingers; dressed in blue-serge suit, light trousers, and dark cap ; flash appearance. Will probably represent he has a farm in Taranaki or Waikopiro. He obtained a pair of boots and trousers by falsely representing he was employed by J. Driscoll at his bush camp.

Dannevirke.—A. Quarterman, charged with uttering a valueless cheque to Charles Baddeley, has been arrested by Detective C. R. Broberg, Wellington police. Offender is identical with Arthur Cecil Quartermain, an absconder from Burnham Industrial School. (See Police Gazette , 1901, page 281, and 1902, page 5.)

Foxton. —On the 19th instant a heavy wooden rail was found laid across the railway-line at a curve near the Foxton Station. A few minutes after it was removed the train from Palmerston passed. The wooden rail had been carried from a stack in the railway yard.

Masterton.— Peter McMahon, charged with default of fine for a breach of prohibition order, has been arrested by Constable C. Woodley, Wellington police, and lodged in the Wellington Gaol.

Wanganui.— Sidney Birchley is charged on warrant with causing bodily harm to Elizabeth Baker on the 7th instant. Description : A quarter-caste Maori, drover, about twenty-two years of age, 5 ft. 6in. high, stout build, dark complexion and hair; sometimes dresses in knickerbockers, and carries a walking-stick, which he swings when walking. Supposed to have gone to Hawke’s Bay, and will probably be dealing in cattle. Was riding a racehorse called Landscape.

Shannon. — Oscar Stanerson is charged on warrant of commitment to Wanganui Gaol for one month in default of paying £2 14s. fine and costs for disorderly conduct while drunk on the 4th instant. Description : Supposed German, sailor, about thirty years of age, 5 ft. 7 in. or 8 in. high, stout build, fresh complexion, fair moustache only, slight squint in both eyes, very round-shouldered; dressed in a light suit of clothes and blue-serge cap. May be going under the name of Olsen.

Christchurch.— J. Keith Cameron is charged on warrant with false pretences on Edith Reid, Clarendon Hotel, on the 29th ultimo. Description: About forty-five years of age, about 5 ft. 6 in. high, fair complexion, fair hair inclined to curl, fair whiskers and moustache, slight build, takes long strides when walking, carries head slightly forward ; supposed dressed in brown clothes. He gave a valueless cheque for £7 to the complainant in payment of board, and received £1 4s. 6d.

Christchurch.— Jessie Harvey, alias Mcßisan, alias Edwards, is charged on warrant of commitment to Lyttelton Gaol for one month in default of paying £2 10s. for soliciting prostitution. Description : A native of Scotland, prostitute, thirty-seven years of age, 5 ft. high, stout build, fresh complexion, grey hair, hazel eyes. (See Police Gazette, 1892, page 36.)

Timaru.— Joseph Williams is charged on warrant with having committed perjury at the Magistrate’s Court, Temuka, on the 3rd instant. Description : A native of New Zealand, labourer, twenty-three years of age, about 5 ft. 6 in. or 7 in. high, slight build, dark complexion, dark hair and eyes, small dark moustache only, walks with a slight stoop ;

very fond of drink ; dressed in dark suit and black soft-felt hat. He worked some time ago on the Central Railway, Otago, and may have gone there again.

Tapanui. — John Dennison is charged on warrant with false pretences on Grigor Grant, storekeeper, on the 15th ultimo. Description: A native of Sydney, about twentyeight years of age, 5 ft. 7in. high, stout build, very dark eyes and hair, small dark moustache, full face ; dressed in dark suit and brown Dr. Jim hat. He obtained an overcoat, value, £2 7s. 6d., and a pair of trousers and shirt, value £1 is. 6d., falsely representing that they were for William May, of Ardmore Station. He was last heard of at Westport, about the end of July.
