Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person, &c.

Gisborne. —Elizabeth Stevenson, boardinghouse-keeper, Gladstone Road, reports stolen from a trunk in her sittingroom, on the 23rd ultimo, a ladies’ brown morocco-leather handbag, and a blue-leather purse with nickel clasp, containing about £SO in notes, gold, silver, and coppers. One £5 note was amongst the money stolen. Bag and purse only identifiable.

Foxton. —Fred. Robinson and Frank Rennell, labourers, report that on the 27th or 28th ultimo their dwelling was broken into, and the following stolen : A silver lever huntingwatch, a silver chain and a round glass pendant, a pair of dark-tweed trousers with red and white stripe running through the material, a double-breasted blue-vicuna vest, and an 18-carat gold keeper, worn sharp at edge, the property of F. Robinson ; value, £ll 15s. Also a dark-blue coat and trousers, the property of Frank Rennell; value, £5. Identifiable. The watch, chain, and pendant have been recovered by Constable J. Foster; they were pledged in Abraham’s pawn-office, Palmerston North, by a man who gave the name of Robertson. No description can be given of him.

George Royal, by Detectives 0. R. Broberg and F. Bishop, Wellington and WaDganui police. Offender sentenced to four months’ hard labour.

Wellington. —Mrs. Hannah Watson, licensee of the Oriental Hotel, reports stolen, between Ist July last and Ist ultimo, thirty-six bar and seventy-two bedroom towels, white and brown; seventy-two plain pillow-slips, ninety single sheets, six small tablecloths (unhemmed), and four whitelinen tablecloths. Nearly all the articles are marked with ink in corner, either “Mrs. Ormsbee, Oriental Hotel,” or “ Orient Dining-rooms ” ; value, £ls. Identifiable.

Wellington. —James Mitchell, farmer, Kiwitea, near Peilding, reports stolen from his bedroom in the City Buffet Hotel, on the 23rd or 24th August last, eight £1 notes, a halfsovereign, and 15s. in silver, and a pocket-book (recovered). Money not identifiable.

Mount Cook (Wellington). —Dr. Albert Martin reports stolen from a bedroom in his dwelling, Ingestre Street, between the sth and 10th ultimo, an 18-carat gold pin (not ring) set with a single diamond ; value, £ls. It has not been recovered, as tbe pin pawned at Metz’s was the property of the suspect, C. Bowen. Suspicion is therefore no longer attached to him.

(See Police Gazette , 1901, page 222.) Lyttelton. —Theft of billiard-balls from Campbell Brown: Hugh Donahy has been arrested for this offence by Constable J. Connell, Lyttelton police, and fined £2 10s. or fourteen days’ hard labour. The billiard-balls have been recovered.

Ashburton. —Thomas Nesbitt Grange, hotelkeeper, reports stolen from a book-case in a sitting-room in the hotel, between the Ist July and 21st ultimo, three large volumes, illustrated, of Shakespeare’s dramas, comedies, and tragedies ; eight volumes of “ Kirk on Health,” bound in red; a large atlas; two volumes of the Town and Country Journal, bound in half-calf, “Thos. Grange ” on inside of cover: value, £7 10s. Identifiable.
