(See Police Gazette, 1901, page 181.) Normanby. — Thomas Doherty, charged with default of fine and costs for drunkenness and assaulting the police, has been arrested by Constable A. G. Heather, Pungarehu police. Pine and costs paid.

(See Police Gazette, 1901, page 191.) Wanganui. —Pinjar, charged with default of fine and costs for a breach of the by-laws, has been arrested by Constable A. A. Mitchell, Christchurch police, and amount paid.

Wellington. Archibald John McNeill, alias Crombie, is charged on warrant with false pretences on Hettie Hatton, barmaid, Central Hotel, on the 23rd ultimo. Description : A native of Scotland, labourer, thirty-one years of age, 5 ft. 6 in. high, fresh complexion, dark-auburn hair, hazel eyes, long sharp nose, discoloured teeth, scar on corner of right eye. (See Police Gazette, 1901, page 190.) He obtained £1 from the complainant by falsely representing he had arrived by the s.s. “ Gothic,” and bad brought ostrich feathers and silk for her. He also showed her a cheque for £75. His parents reside at Woodbaugh, Dunedin. He sometimes wears marine engineer’s uniform, and represents himself as being employed on one of the large steamers. Other charges pending.

Wellington. —Mrs. Francis, Manchester Street, Christchurch, reports that on the 12th ultimo she received a telegram purporting to be from her son, asking for £3. The amount was forwarded on the following day, and paid by the Wellington postal authorities to a man falsely representing himself to be her son Robert Francis. Suspicion attached to Leonard Pocock, who recently resided in Christchurch, and is well acquainted with the complainant and her son. He was arrested at Wellington on another charge, but the postal officials were unable to identify him as having sent the telegram or received the reply. Wellington. —George Thomas Ross, charged with false pretences on Adele Hadfield, has been arrested by Constable J. Fitzpatrick, Taihape police, on information supplied by Constable W. D. Thompson, Upper Hutt police, and remanded.

Christchurch. — John McKay is charged on warrant of commitment to Lyttelton Gaol for one month, in default of paying £4 175., for assault on Charles Mumford, on the 13th August last, at Christchurch. Description: A native of New Zealand, a labourer, twenty-one years of age, 5 ft. sin. high, medium build, fresh complexion, brown hair, blue eyes, clean-shaved except small fair moustache; dressed in brown-tweed sac suit and cap.
