Special Inquiry.
Jack McLachlan, alias McLoughlin, is wanted by the Johannesburg police on a charge of having, in 1895, murdered a man there named Stevenson. Description: About 5 ft. 6 in. high, forty years of age, very dark brown hair beard and moustache beginning to turn grey, fresh complexion, grey eyes, small well-shaped nose, low forehead, very strongly built; “Faith, Hope, and Charity” tattooed on right forearm, shield, &c., on left forearm, figure of woman tattooed on both arms; his right hand is off about 6in. below the elbow, but he has a false hand, upon which he usually wears a kid glove ; he is slightly knock-kneed, when walking swings his left arm, his right he holds in a still and constrained position. He was a notorious cracksman and saferobber at Johannesburg, and, as he was mining there, has a good knowledge of explosives. The above offender arrived in Auckland by the s.s. “ Mount Sirion,” and on the 25th November, 1895, was sentenced, under the name of Thomas Kenny, to twelve months for having housebreaking implements in his possession (see Police Gazette, 1896, page 210), and for a similar offence was sentenced in 1897, under the name of Thomas Kenny, alias John Dell, to three years (see Police Gazette, 1897, page 76), and was sentenced in Lyttelton to fourteen days for being a stowaway (see Police Gazette, 1900, page 199). He left Christchurch on the 10th November last by train going south, and had a kit of tools with him, and intended travelling round the country doing tinsmithing-work. He has also been cooking, and may be found in some out-of-the-way station. Special inquiry will be made to trace his present whereabouts, and, if found, information at once forwarded to the Commissioner’s Office. (01/1282.)
