Horse and Cattle Stealing.

Kawakawa. Jack, or John, Miles, alias Dick Haokett, charged with theft of a horse, the property of David Forsyth, is now undergoing a sentence of twelve months under the name of W. J. Hogan. (See list of prisoners tried at the Supreme Court; also, Police Gazette, 1899, page 221, and 1900, pages 14 and 16.) Suspected of theft and horsesteaing.l

Johnsonville. —Theft of Walter Futter's horse : Andrew Fraser has been arrested for this offence by Constable J. Twomey, Feilding police ; and Frank King by ActingDetective A. Cameron, Wellington police, for same offence.

Haweba,—Alfred Barkland, labourer, reports stolen, in September, 1899, a chestnut mare, with light-coloured mane and tail, aged, about 15 hands high, branded N.W. on off shoulder, white on one or more feet, star on forehead, hip injured, causing a perceptible limp when walking. About the Ist instant a horse answering above description was seen near Normanby, ridden by a man of whom no description can be given.

Hawera. —Thomas Barrett, farmer, reports stolen from his paddock, on the 29th or 30th May last, a dark-bay heavy harness gelding, four years old, about 15 hands high, star on forehead, one hind foot white, no brands; value, £ls. Identifiable.

Inglewood. —Theft of Herbert John Woodfield’s horse: Charles Cookery has been arrested for this offence by Constable T. E. De Norville, Palmerston North police, and committed for trial. Horse recovered by the Christchurch police.

Palmerston North. —John Lynch, farmer, reports stolen from the Palmerston North sale-yards, on the 20th April last, a dark-bay gelding, unbroken, rising three years old, about 14 hands 3 in. high, cobby appearance, tail docked short, large head; value, £8 ss. Suspicion attached to Charles Cockery, a colonial, a horse-dealer, about twentyeight years of age, 6 ft. high, slight build, clean-shaved except fair moustache. On the 24th April he shipped a number of horses to Christchurch, and this one may be amongst the number.

Palmerston North. —P. C. Palmes, farmer, Levin, reports supposed stolen from the sale-yards at Palmerston North, on the 20th April last, a bright-bay gelding (unbroken), rising three years old, 15 hands high, a little white on forehead, no known brand, carries head well; value £6. Suspicion attached to Charles Cockery (see preceding paragraphs), who may have shipped the horse to Christchurch with the one which he has been arrested for stealing from Herbert John Woodfield.

Palmerston North. —Thomas James Collinson, draper, reports supposed stolen on the 12th March last, a bright-bay draught geloing, about 14£ bands high, rising five years old, white star on forehead, a little white on one hind fetlock, branded NO (conjoined) on near hind-quarter, broken to harness, carries head rather low, shows more white in one eye than the other; value £25. Identifiable.

TeMuea. George Johnson, farmer, reports supposed stolen, on the 30th ultimo or Ist instant, a light chestnut hack gelding, white face, two years old, unbroken ; a dark chestnut hack gelding unbroken ; a bay hack gelding, aged, white face, near leg deformed, no brands : value, £45.

Invercargill. —Peroy Challis, hotelkeeper, Kennington, reports stolen from his stable on the 7th or Bth instant, a black gelding, four years old, small head, about 16£ hands high, long tail, off front fetlock joint slightly enlarged, shod all round ; also a new canvas cover, “ Spratt ” on it: value, £l9 6s.
