Stealing Otherwise than from the Person or from Dwellings.

Auckland. —James Albert Cooper, hatter, reports that, between the 22ud and 24th ultimo, his shop in Queen Street was broken into and the following stolen: A black mackintosh, a brown check waterproof, and a green-and-white waterproof: value, £7 55.; also a small bag made of blue and white shirting, containing a £1 note and £4 17s. 3d. in mixed silver.

Newton (Auckland). —Alexander Thomas Craig, builder, Marine Parade, reports stolen from a building in Hopetown Street, between the 22nd and 24th ultimo, two 2£ in. chisels, one with boxwood, the other with an ash handle; a leather bag, containing about nine bits (different sizes), compasses, four gouges, a 3 ft. rule, broke and mended with a piece of copper, and a punoh : value, £1 7s. Identifiable.

Dargaville.— Charles Henry Barton Foster is charged on warrant with the theft, on or about the 4th June, 1901, of £5 10s., moneys of George Mcßride, merchant tailor, Victoria Street, Auckland. Offender is a native of New Zealand, about twenty-four years of age, 5 ft. BJin. high, medium build, clean-shaved, brown eyes, dark smooth complexion, tinted reddish colour, dark-brown hair; generally dressed in a greenish-grey coloured sao suit and tweed golf cap, or in blue Vicuna suit and hard black hat. Pahiatua. —Catherine M. Nelson, Ruatea, reports supposed stolen from the train between Kaka’iki and Pahiatua, on the 9th March last, a brown canvas holdall, secured with double straps, “ J. Nelson,” in white paint on it, containing a riding-habit and gaiters, a grey alpaca dress, a white blouse trimmed with yellow silk and lace, a pink-flannel nightdress, a change of underlinen, and a number of collars and handkerchiefs; a brush and comb, in embroidered bag; a small wooden box containing a very thin gold ring, set with a large diamond surrounded by brilliants; a gold ring, set with three diamonds, shamrock pattern (old-fashioned setting) ; a scarf-pin, red enamel surrounded by pearls, “ Martha Hale ” on back : a necklace of Roman pearls ; a small gold bar brooch, set with turquoise, one stone missing; a silver thimble. Most of the clothing marked “ C. M. Nelson.” Value, £ll3 15s. Identifiable.

Stratford.— George Smart, plumber, reports that between 1 a.m.and 7 a.m., 15th ultimo, his shop was broken into, the safe was removed to the back of the premises and an attempt made to open it.

Wellington. —Leonard Dart, clerk, 135, Taranaki Street, reports stolen off his bicycle iD Lambton Quay, on the 14th ultimo, a nickel acetylene-gas bicycle-lamp; trade mark, a raised bee on front of lamp, and “ R. P. B.”; maker’s name unknown : value, £1 2s. 6d.

Wellington. —Massey, Harris, and Company report supposed stolen, on April last, a Massey-Harris bicycle, model 6, No. 18764 ; value, £2O. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Henry Mitchell, who had the bicycle on time payment and is supposed to have sold it. Wellington.—V. Reid, 2, Stapleton Avenue, North Sydney, reports stolen, between the Ist and 15th March last, a silver English lever watch, maker “ Little Bros., London ” ; a silver open-faced stop watch, with glass back; an old-fashioned snuffbox, Scotch pebble (check pattern) on top, pebble at bottom, gold rim on lid, containing the following Jubilee coins: a five-shilling, a four-shilling, a half-crown, a shilling, and a three-penny piece, and a rupee : value, not stated. Supposed stolen in transit between Wellington and Sydney.

Clyde Quay (Wellington).— Mrs. W. F. Perry, No. 2, Holland Street, reports stolen from her clothes line, on the 14th or 15th ultimo, a three-quarter honeycomb-pattern bedquilt; a full-size quilt, flowers worked in red in centre, “ W ” in red cotton on one corner: both nearly new; also, two white honeycomb toilet - covers: value, £4. Identifiable.

Stafford. — Benjamin Lyons, storekeeper, reports stolen between Wellington and Stafford, between the 22nd and 27th May last, a new dark-brown tweed suit, with red thread running through the cloth; size 5; the trousers-buttons were marked “ Own Make ” ; value, £2 10s. The above •articles formed part of a parcel from Bing, HarrL, and Co. per s.s. “ Corinna,” via Hokitika, and were stolen in transit.

Christchurch. —John Grey, labourer, reports stolen from Islam Road, Riccarton, on the Bth ultimo, a gentleman’s Waverley bicycle, No. 114666, black enamelled, 16 model, Rambler chain ; value, £lB. Identifiable.

Christchurch. —The frame and back-wheel of Frederick Weymouth’s bicycle were found in Cashel Street, and handed over to the owner. The front wheel and a saddle of another machine had been fitted into the frame.

Lyttelton. —Miss Scott, Lancaster Park, reports stolen from the social hall of the s.s. “Mokoia,” on the 31st May last, a grey opossum rug lined with blue material, value not stated. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to spielers who were on board, on their way to Christchurch and Dunedin.

Methven. Theft from James Hemy Stone’s shopJoseph Clarkson alias Kelly has been arrested for this offence by Constable D. Connolly, Dunedin police, and sentenced to two years’ hard labour.

Dunedin.— Sergeant-Major Towler, drill-instructor, report stolen from the rack of a first-class railway-carriage, between Stirling and Dunedin, on the Bth April last, a doublebarrelled breech-loedir.g gun, 20 bore, makers “ Ancion, Tiege and Co.”, top action, rebounding locks, with crossbolt ; value, £6. Identifiable.

MoRNiNGTON. Alexander Morrison, engineer, reports stolen from his vest, which was on the ground, at the Town Belt, when ho was playing football on the 15th ultimo, a silver lever open-faced watch, No. 14970 ; maker, Alexander Kelt, Dundee : value, £6.
