Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person, &c.

Auckland. —Ellen Kane, barmaid, reports stolen from he bedroom in the Victoria Hotel, between the 10th and 12th ultimo, a ladies’ gold hunting keyless watch, No. 2199419; a gold curb pattern chain, 3ft. long; a gold cross, with greenstone centre attached ; a curb pattern gold necklace, large locket attached ; a gold curb bracelet, padlock attached : value, £4O. Identifiable.

Auckland. —Theft of Robert Matthew Barr’s money. The suspect, Henry Clarke, has been arrested for this offence by Constable W. Harvey, Auckland police, and admitted to probation for twelve months.

Avondale. —Annie Duncan reports that on the Bth ultimo her dwelling at Mount Albert was broken into and the following stolen : A ladies’ silver Geneva hunting-watch, out of repair, “ A. H.” supposed scratched on outer case ; a short three-strand silver chain with tassel attached : value, £3. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown, who was seen coming out of the front gate. Description : About nineteen years of age, 5 ft. 8 in. high, medium build, fair hair and complexion ; dressed in navy-blue coat, grey skull-oap, greenish-coloured tweed trousers, and tan boots or shoes. Avondale. —George Bell Dawson, settler, reports stolen from his dwelling, on the 11th ultimo, a pair of rough serge trousers, size 4 ; a £1 note, a sovereign, a half-sovereign, 17s. 6d. in silver, and a sixpence dated 1860: total value, £3 18s.

Parnell (Auckland). —Thomas Smith and John Gordon, labourers, report stolen from their bedroom in Berndtsan’s boardinghouse, on the 11th ultimo, two £5 notes, the property of Smith, and twenty £1 notes and 155., the property of Gordon. Not identifiable.

Ponsonby (Auckland). —Robert Laing, farmer, Kaipara, reports stolen from him, on the 11th ultimo, a leather purse containing Bs., a cheque drawn by the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Company for £9 6s. 9d. on the Bank of New Zealand in favour of J. J. Buckton, and a cheque on the Bank of New South Wales for 165., drawn by Frederick P. Laing, James Laing, and Charles Gardener, marked “ Araparara School Account,” payable to bearer.

Newmarket (Auckland).— Ming Him, gardener, reports that on the 22nd ultimo his dwelling was broken into, and a gold watch-chain and three razors stolen; value, £1 10s.

Mount Roskill Road (Auckland). William Hendry Taylor, cabinetmaker, reports that on the 20th ultimo his dwelling at Mount Eden was broken into, and the following stolen: Two £1 notes, and a small tin box containing three foreign coins about the size of a sixpence, and one about the size of a five-shilling piece; total value, £8 ss.

Woodville. —J. G. Gow, Wellington, reports stolen from the Club Hotel, on the 12th ultimo, a long Inverness coat, very small grey check pattern, velvet collar, Kaiapoi make; has inside pocket on left side: value, £3. Identifiable.

Wellington. —Harry Ranish, billiard-table manufacturer, reports stolen from his dwelling between the 18th and 20th ultimo, a silver lever English open-faced watoh, “ H. R.” scratched on inside of case; a 9-carat gold double-chain with long links; a gold locket with flower on it on one end, and a silver match-box at the other end of chain ; a ladies’ small rolled-gold hunting watch, *• Philadelphia ” on dial; a me'.al chain, square links, joined by small round ones: total value, £l2. Identifiable.

Wellington. William Richmond Hursthouse, clerk, National Bank, Nelson, reports stolen from the passago of the A 1 Hotel, on the 19th ultimo, a rough blue-serge fullsize Inverness waterproof overcoat, light-blue lining: value, £2 9s. Identifiable.

Wellington. Jacob Turina’s portmanteau stolen: Frederick Warren has been arrested for this offence by Detective C. R. Broberg, Wellington police, and sentenced to twelve months’ hard labour. Property recovered.

Wellington. —Joseph Parker, labourer, Kemp’s Farm, Kaupokonui, Taranaki, reports stolen from an unlocked box in his room, No. 222, Willis Street, on the 22nd or 23rd ultimo, twenty £1 notes on the Bank of New Zealand. Numbers unknown. Suspicion attached to Charles Edward Tilby, who occupied the same room and induced complainant to draw the money out of the Savings-bank to become partner with him as a photographic artist. Description: A native of England, a ship’s steward, about twenty seven years of age, about 5 ft. 5 in. high, slight build, dark hair, small dark moustache only, dressed in dark suit, double-breasted vest, white shirt, high collar, and dark-tweed cap. Is well known to ships’ stewards, for whom he often paints pictures of ships. He was hard-up for money, and cleared out on the 23rd instant, leaving his luggage behind him. He knew the money had been placed in the box by the complainant.

Wellington. —Mrs. Henry Sutton reports supposed stolen from her at the Manawatu Railway Station, on the 17ch ultimo, a small black morocco purse, containing a £5-note (bank and number unknown), two firs'-class return tickets to Hawera, and a plain gold watch, “M.A.S.” engraved on it, value £1 ss. Identifiable.

Wellington.— John Storah, labourer, Waipawa, reports stolen from the Central Hotel, on the 7th ultimo, a BeestonHumber bicyole, about a 26 in. black-enamelled frame, Westwood rims, black spokes, Champion saddle, broken, 70 gear, new tire on back wheel, front tire much worn, nickel-plated bars, cork grips ; value, £lO. Identifiable.

Manners Street (Wellington). John Gibbs, boilermaker, reports stolen from his bedroom, on the 13th ultimo, a pair of nearly new light-tweed pants with small dark spots; value, £1 ss. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown , who occupied the same room. Description: About twenty-three years of age, about 5 ft. 7 in. high, medium build, small dark moustache, prominent front teeth, dressed in shabby dark coat and vest, brown canvas shoes, and brown felt hat.

Manners Street (Wellington).—John Toovey, blacksmith, reports stolen from the Masonic Hotel, on the 18th ultimo, a swag (recovered); value, £5. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown, who sold it at Heavey’s secondhand shop. Description: About thirty-five years of age, 5 ft. Bin. high, medium build, dark complexion, small moustaohe, dressed in blue-serge suit and cap.

Clyde Quay (Wellington). —James Gray, carpenter, reports that about 4.30 p.m., 7th ultimo, he was assaulted and robbed of 18s. in silver by a man, name unknown. Description : About thirty years of age, 5 ft. 3 in. high, fair complexion, full face, clean-shaved except brown moustache, stout build; dressed in blue-serge suit, soft-felt black hat, and bluoher boots. Identifiable. Complainant had been drinking with the offender, and when passing through the Tea Gardens at Oriental Bay with him he pushed him down and took the money from his trousers pocket.

Nelson. —George Frank, telegraphist, reports stolen from his dwelling on the 25th ultimo, a lady’s Geneva silver openfaced watch, both hands broken, number and maker unknown ; a ladies’ silver watch-chain, with very fine links, two gold tassels attached; also, 10s. in silver: total value, £2 10s.

Nelson. —Catherine Floyd, boardinghouse-keeper, reports stolen on the 15th or 16th ultimo, a ladies’ brown cape, with very deep-black curly hair, collar fastened with hooks in front, no buttons on cape, a narrow velvet ribbon on inside of back for a belt : value, £3 10s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Mrs. Tolmin, alias Madam Mayne, who was boarding at Mrs. Floyd’s. Description: Supposed three quarter caste Maori, about thirty-five years of age, about 5 ft. 3 in. high, very stout build, dark complexion, very dark hair, very full round face, dark eyes; was wearing a khaki dress trimmed with narrow red velvet, dark-brown mackintosh, black-velvet hat trimmed with red velvet ; has a little girl, about three years old, with fair curly hair, with her. Left for Wellington per s.s. “ Mapourika ”on the 16th ultimo.

Hokitika. —Ellen Caldwell, domestic servant, Sale Street, reports that about 3 p.m., 10th ultimo, in Cass Square, a leather purse with clasp, containing 10s. in silver, was snatched from her band by a man, name unknown. Description : About forty or forty-five years of age, dark hair, short dark whiskers, very pale, sickly, dissipated looking face, slender build ; dressed in dirty grey suit, and black slouch hat. Identification doubtful.

Christchurch. —Henry G. Guthrie, traveller, Moray Place, Dunedin, reports stolen from the passage of the Market Hotel, on the 6th or 7th ultimo, a large brownleather Gladstone bag. containing samples of patent brushes, “ Moirer, Glasgow ” stamped on the handles, and three book rolls of samples of paperhangings; value, £l3 ss. Identifiable.

Christchurch. —Theft of John Kelly’s watch. William Whitehead, alias H. Wheeler, has beeu arrested for this offence by Detective G. Fitzgerald and Constable J. Fahey, Christchurch police.

Amberley. —Henry Owen Brooks, hotelkeeper, reports stolen from him, between the 2nd and 4th ultimo, a cheque for £2 55., drawn by the Kowai Road Board. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown, who cashed the cheque at the Bank of New South Wale 3 on the 4th ultimo. Description : About twenty-five years of age, tall and thin, shaggy beard, looked like a swagger, supposed wearing lightcoloured trousers and soft hat. Identification doubtful.

Ellerslie. —On the 21st or 22nd ultimo there was stolen from the Harp of Erin Hotel a small alms-box, “ Alms for the poor, Sisters of the Poor” printed on it, supposed containing about £1 10s. in silver and coppers. Suspicion attaches to Frank Rush, colonial, about nineteen years of age, about 5 ft. 7 in. high, medium build, dark complexion, dark hair; recently from New Plymouth, and looks after racehorses.
