Auckland. Henry Samuel Currie or Curry is charged on warrant with theft on the Postmaster-General on the 9th June, 1900. Description: A native of Christchurch, New Zealand, a watchmaker, thirty-four years of age, 5 ft. 8f in. high, swarthy complexion, dark-brown hair, grey eyes, long nose, pimples on oheeks, brown beard whiskers and moustache, anchor on left arm; dressed in dark-tweed suit (see Police Gazette, 1895, page 49). He was accompanied by Mrs. Lewis, about thirty-four years of age, 5 ft. 1 in. high, medium

build, short waist, slovenly appearance. Left Onehunga for New Plymouth in the beginning of October last, and may be travelling under the name of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis. Offender was living apart from his wife, and forged her name to an order on the Postmaster at Newton, by which he obtained a registered letter containing £2. A charge of forgery is also pending.

Waihi. —James Grade reports that on the 23rd ultimo, as his son Charlie, five years old, was playing in the yard behind the house, the top joint was shot off his finger by a pea-gun or revolver. No one was seen about, but suspicion is attached to William F. Barker, who may have been shooting at fowls in the yard. Description: A miner, thirty-eight years of age, 5 ft. 9 in. high, fair hair and moustache, pale complexion, sleepy grey eyes. Warrant issued for some person or persons unknown for discharging destructive material causing bodily harm.

Hamilton. —J. P. Peterson, charged with false pretences on Thomas Floyd and J. Bright, is identical with George Miller (see Police Gazette, 1899, page 261).

Hastings. —Robert Gardiner, alias James Collins, is oharged on three warrants of commitment to Napier Gaol for fifteen days in default of paying £1 17s. 6d. fine and costs for drunkenness, resisting police, and damage to property. Description: A native of Australia, a labourer, forty-three years of age but looks older, 5 ft. 7Jin. high, stout build, dark auburn hair turning grey, dark-grey eyes, ruddy complexion, clean - shaved exoept light-brown moustache ; walks very erect, and takes very short steps; dressed in light-coloured tweed suit and soft brown-felt hat; clasped hands and basket of fruit tattooed on right arm (see Police Gazette, 1899, pages 150 and 235). He was convicted for the above offences, and allowed until the 30th ultimo to pay the above amount, but failed to do so. There is now due £2 6s. 6d.

Palmerston South. — Thomas Thompson is charged on warrant with theft as co-owner. Description : A native of New Zealand, about twenty-three years of age, about 5 ft. 8 in. high, stout build, fair hair, clean-shaved except fair moustache, blue eyes, large nose ; dressed in dark sac coat and khaki-coloured trousers full at bottom; has friends living at

Adam’s Flat, Otago. Offender and Edwin Charles Harris were partners rabbiting at Macrae’s. Stronach and Morris, Dunedin, forwarded a cheque for £22 15s. lOd. to Thompson as payment for rabbit-skms sent them. On the 27th October offender cashed the cheque at Dunedin, and has not been seen ince.

(See Police Gazette , 1900, page 239.) Dannevirke. — Thomas Bray, charged on commitment warrant in default of fine for theft, was employed on the Mokihinui-Karamea Government co-operative roadworks, and left there by train on the 27th ultimo, supposed for Westport.

Dannevirke. —Charles Patterson, oharged with the theft of Andrew Lang’s saddle and bridle, and suspected of theft from Andrew John Fitzgerald’s dwelling, has been arrested by Constable J. Black, Marton police, on information supplied by Detective F. Bishop, and remanded.

Mount Cook (Wellington). —Quang Young, storekeeper, 30, Nairn Street, reports that about 11 p.m on the 27th ultimo some person knocked at his door, and when he opened it he was forced on the floor by two or three men, and his pockets, which were empty, searched. No description can be given of the men, and he could not identify them.

Amberley. —Minnie Hockley, cook, reports that on the 9th instant, when wheeling her bicycle about 2 chains from the outer gate to Mount Grey Downs, Balcairns, a man, name unknown, pulled her to the side of the avenue and committed rape on her. He is described as a big broadshouldered man, between thirty and forty years of age, good accent, and had a dog with him. Identification doubtful.

Dunedin. —Rose Kempton, six and a half years of age, reports that about 6 p.m. on the 2nd instant a man, name unknown, committed rape on her at Ocean Beach, South Dunedin. Offender is described as a young man with red hands and face, red moustache, dressed in dungaree, and wearing a brown or khaki-coloured Dr. Jim hat. Complainant had seen her father off by the car to Dunedin, when offender took her by the hand, led her over the sandhills, and committed the above offence. Identification doubtful.

Invercargill. William Andrews, alias “ Curly Bill,” is oharged on warrant with disobeying the terms of his recognisance. Description : A native of Tasmania, a labourer and horsebreaker, forty-six years of age, 5 ft. 7 in. high, stout build, hair inclined to be curly, full round face, clean-shaved except light sandy moustache may be mixed with grey hairs ; was dressed in light-grey tweed suit and light-brown soft hat (see Police Gazette, 1900, pages 183, 221, and 233). Offender was committed for trial and admitted to bail. He was ordered to report himself regularly to the constable at Orepuki, but failed to do so. On the 3rd instant he was seen at Invercargill and intended going to Dunedin, but may seek employment shearing.
