Deserting Wives and Families, &c.

Sydney. — John Charles Wilson is charged on warrants, issued by the North Sydney Bench on the 11th April, 1899, for disobeying Magisterial orders for the support of his wife and child. Description : A miner, thirty-two years of age, 5 ft. 9 in. high, stout build, dark complexion, black moustache, bald patch on back of head. He may be accompanied by a half-caste Chinese woman, named Elizabeth Tang, or Shang, about twenty-four years of age, about 5 ft. 7 in. high, medium build, coarse black hair (see New South Wales Police Gazette, 1899, p. 147). He is said to have come to Auckland, and may go under the name of Fred Williams, but no trace of him can be discovered there. Tasmania. Launceston District.— Archibald Erskine Smith is charged on warrant, issued on the 26th ultimo by E. Whitfeld, Esq., J.P., that he, being a person of sufficient means, did, without lawful or reasonable cause or exouse, for a period of three consecutive months from the 25th November, 1899, at Launceston, leave his wife Mary Ann Margaret Smith, and his female child by her, and three children by her former husband, without means of support. Description: About thirty-two years of age, sft. 7 in. or Bin. high, stout build, full face, fresh complexion, blue eyes, brown curly hair, fair moustache, has a mark or scar on eaoh side of neck, is a pugilist or gambler, and will probably be found at some mining centre ; is said to be well known in other colonies, and is likely to be found in New Zealand.

Auckland.— Charles Richard Sutherland is charged on warrant with deserting his child. Description: English, a canvasser, thirty-two years of age, 5 ft. 9 in. high, stout build, fresh complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, small nose turned up at point, fair moustache only, smart gait, generally wears a grey-tweed suit and brown cap. He has been in the Imperial army, and in the Permanent Artillery, New Zealand.

Auckland. William Goldsmith is charged on warrant with deserting his two children since December last. Description: English, a fireman and labourer, thirtysix years of age, about 5 ft. 7 in. high, black hair, dark moustache only, blue eyes, blue scat on bridge of nose, “ Faith, Hope, & Charity ” tattooed on one arm, and “ Not in God we trust ” on the other, both near the shoulder; employed for years as fireman on the Union Steamship Company’s boats. He was last heard of in New Plymouth in December last. Photograph at Inspector’s office.

Auckland.— William Ashby is charged on warrant of commitment to Auckland Prison for one month in default of paying £2 7s. 6d. for the maintenance of his illegitimate child. Description : English, twenty-eight years of age, 5 ft. 11 in. high, fair complexion, brown hair, fair moustache, sharp features, slight build. He had a farm at Papakura, which he recently sold, and was last seen in Auckland.

Palmerston North.— Richard Carne is charged on warrant with deserting his wife, Lucy Carne, and children since the 29th of January last. Description: English, a labourer, about forty years of age, about 5 ft. 4 in. high,

clean-shaved except moustache, hair turning grey, blue eyes, erect gait, medium build, quiet manner but fond of drink; dressed in dirty grey suit and soft-felt bat with wide rim. Last seen in Foxton on the sth ultimo.

Wanganui. — Robert McKay is charged on warrant with disobeying an order of Court to pay ss. per week towards the maintenance of his father. Description: a native of New Zealand, about thirty-four years of age, 5 ft. Ilf in. high, medium build, square shoulders, black hair, moustache and sideboards only; walks with toes slightly turned in. He was at Balclutha about two months ago, and is now supposed employed as shepherd or farmlabourer on a station in the North Island.

Christchurch. — Alfred Jenet is charged on warrant with failing to provide for his illegitimate child. Description : A native of New Zealand, a fruiterer, twenty-five years of age, 5 ft. 6 in. high, fresh complexion, very fair hair, blue eyes, small fair moustache only ; generally wears brown-tweed sac-suit and hard brown-felt hat. He kept a fruit-shop in Leeston, and left there on the 15th instant, supposed for Auckland. Complainant, Sophia Thorsen, 35, Walker Street, Christchurch.

Christchurch. — John Cameron is charged on warrant with disobeying an order of Court to pay 6s. Bd. per week for the maintenance of his children. Description : A colonial, forty-three years of age, a shearer and slaughterman, 5 ft. 7 in. high, stout build, florid complexion, blue eyes, dark-brown hair, heavy fair moustache only, walks erect. He was seen in Christchurch in the middle of January last, and was then wearing a blue-serge sac-suit and a grey soft-felt hat. The sum of £9 was due on the 6th February, 1900. (See Police Gazette, 1899, page 135.) Christchurch.— William McGregor, charged with disobeying an order of the Court for the support of his wife: The warrant has been cancelled.

Timaru. — Frederick Dale is charged on warrant with failing to provide for the future maintenance of his unborn illegitimate ohild. Description : A colonial, groom and barman, twenty years of age, 6 ft. high, strong build, fair hair, blue eyes, slightly stooped, a slouching gait; dressed in serge suit and slouch hat. He left Timaru about six weeks ago, accompanied by a blacksmith named Charlie Phillips. Complainant, Annie Thomas, Catherine Street, Timaru.

Gore. — Charles Ramsay is charged on warrant with failing to provide for the maintenance of his children. Description : Supposed native of New Zealand, an enginedriver, thirty-seven years of age, about 5 ft. 9 in. high, medium build, dark complexion, dark-brown curly hair, dark-brown whiskers and moustache. He may attempt to leave the colony.

Invercargill.— George Woodhouse is charged on warrant with failing to provide for the maintenance of his unborn illegitimate child. Description: Native of New Zealand, a miner, twenty-seven years of age, 5 ft. 10 in. high, slim build, fair complexion, fair hair, blue eyes, fair moustache only, a slight scar on eyebrow and on ear, has a long neck; when last seen was wearing a blue-serge suit and hard black hat. He was living until recently at Queenstown, and is said to have left by the s.s. “ Talune ” on the sth instant for South Africa. Complainant, Constance Yon Tunzelmann, North Invercargill.
