Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person, &c.

Auckland. —John Charles Veitch, artist, Snakspere Hotel, reports stolen from his box, between the 9th and 25th ultimo, a gold scarf-ring, oval shape, set with a straw-coloured topaz, a cornet engraved on one side, and the letter “ S ” on the other, value £4 10s.; and about twelve photographs of military men, value 10s. Suspicion attached to Charles Talbot, who was night-porter at the hotel, and is supposed to have gone to Wanganui. Description: About twenty years of age, about 6 ft. high, slight build, very round shoulders, sallow complexion, large Jewish nose, with scar on bridge, lower lip double, dark hair worn long, large feet ; dressed in shabby dark clothes.

Waite kauri. —James Bailey, labourer, reports stolen from a bedroom in the Hauraki Hotel, on the 25th ultimo, a gentlemen’s silver lever open-faced watch, “ John Taylor, London,” stamped on plate, No. 5036, “H. Bailey” inscribed on inside of baok case ; value, £5.

Napier. —Charlotte Hodgetts, care of Mrs. McCarthy, Carlyl9 Street, reports stolen from her room, on the 25th ultimo, a brown-leather purse with “ Forget me not ” written on back, containing a £1 note, a sovereign, and 18s. in silver. Purse identifiable.

Napier. —John Parker, merchant, Spit, reports stolen, about the 28th June last, a dark-wood walking-stick showing elaborate Maori carving, image of the one-eyed chief Renata with greenstone mere in his hand on handle ; and a redwood fishing-rod, in several lengths, enclosed in a brownflannel case: value, £3 10s.

Napier. —H. E. Harrington, telegraph officer, Thompson Road, reports stolen from his dwelling, on the 2nd instant, a ladies’ gold Waltham open-faced keyless watch, No. 4570170, E.H. engraved on outside of back case ; value, £ls.

Herbertville. —Gregor Stewart, roadman, Waione, near Weber, reports stolen from his dwelling, on the 20th ultimo, a gold albert chain, long plain links, unmounted greenstone pendant attached; and a new tennis-shirt with blue-and-yellow stripes : value, £3 10s.

Foxton. —Osborne John Fowler, flax-mill hand, Carnarvon, reports stolen from his whare, on the 30tli ultimo or Ist instant, a gold watch-chain, plain and fancy links, bar in centre, brass catch at one end, gold-mounted greenstone pendant attached; value, £7 10s. Suspicion attached to a man named John Thorpe, also known as John Dart, who worked at the same mill. Description : A native of New Zealand, a labourer, thirty years of age, 5 ft. 6 in. high, medium build, fresh complexion, fair hair and moustache only; dressed in dark clothes and soft black hat. He left by train on the 4th instant for Oroua Bridge or Palmerston North.

Levin. —Samuel M. Baker, farmer, Kereru, reports stolen, between the 11th and 14th ultimo, an old telescope, about 6 in. long when closed, brownish-coloured metal; value, £5. Suspicion attached to Ashby Samuel Hawthorne, who was employed as a labourer by complainant, and left for Wellington on the last above-mentioned date. Description : English, said he was a painter, about twenty years of age, about 5 ft. 8 in. high, medium build, fair hair and complexion, little or no hair on face; dressed in a grey-tweed sac-coat, and grey cap ; carried a swag, in which he had some paintbrushes. He spoke of going to his uncle, named Wilson, who lives about eight miles from Ashburton, and that his parents are residing at Hastings.

Wellington. — A man, name unknown, is charged on warrant with having, on the 25th ultimo, stolen from the Terminus Hotel a silver watch and albert, value £8 (since recovered); and a black-cloth sac-coat, nearly new, D.I.C. on tab, fourth button from neck half broken off, value £2 10s. : the property of Maurice Thomas McGrath. Offender is supposed English, a fireman, about thirty-five years of age, about 5 ft. 7in. high, stout build, round red face, fair moustache only; wore a blue-serge suit, black cap, and black necktie. Can be identified. He gave the watch and albert to a prostitute named Mary Burnip, alias Bell, and is supposed to have gone to Featherston or Masterton to look for wool-pressing.

Blenheim. —Alexander Ross, commercial traveller, care of Briscoe, Mac Neil, and Co., Wellington, reports stolen from the Criterion Hotel, Blenheim, on the 27th ultimo, a gentlemen’s brown mackintosh, 52 in., with heavy cape sewn on, light-check lining, brown buttons to match coat, fourth button from neck hanging loose, two side pockets, the left one being higher than the right, and small match-pocket, buttons missing from back, value £3; and a pair of heavy tan-leather driving-gloves, value ss.

Lyttelton. —Henry Jones, seaman, s.s. “ lonic,” reports stolen from him, on the 28th ultimo, a silver Geneva openfaced watch, three-quarter plate, “ Kendall and Dent, Made in Bam,” on dial, well worn, glass chipped on edge, silver on edge dented, number not known, value £1 55.; and an Abyssinian gold chain, long links, value ss. Firemen on the steamer suspected.

Tapanui. Alexander Anderson, farmer, reports stolen from his dwelling, on the 22nd ultimo, eight nuggets (about 1J oz.) of Western Australia gold ; value, £6. A few of them are identifiable by general appearance.

Balclutha. —Allen Bishop, manager, National Bank, reports missing and supposed stolen from his dwelling, between January last and the Bth ultimo, a butterfly brooch, body of pearls, set in gold, with ruby eyes, gold wings, studded with eight diamonds, rubies, and sapphires (blue stones); value, £ls 15s.
