Horse- and Cattle-stealing.

Kawakawa.— Jack, or John, Miles, alias Dick Hackett, is charged on warrant with the theft of a horse, saddle, and bridle, at Toka Toka, Wairoa, during the month of April, 1898 ; value, £9 ; the property of David Forsyth. Since recovered. Offender is colonial, about twenty-eight years of age, 5 ft. 10 in. or 11 in. high, medium build, fresh complexion, dark-brown hair, small fair or sandy moustache only; supposed dressed in a dark sac-suit; good-looking; usually works in the bush as a bullock-driver ; is well known to bushmen, particularly about the Wairoa River. He obtained the loan of the horse, &c., to ride from Toka Toka to Hikurangi, but sold the horse at Mangakahia, and the saddle and bridle at Kamo. Hs is supposed to have been seen near Matakohe recently. Other charges of false pretenoes pending.

Thames. —Robert Fredric Spencer, labourer, Tararu Creek, reports stolen from a paddock, about the 26th June last, a dark-brown mare, about seven years old, 14 hands high, tan muzzle, white star on forehead, two or three spots on under-part of neck near throat, one hind fetlock white with scar over hoof, branded O on near shoulder ; value, £4.

Stratford. —Thomas Meredith Smith, farmer, reports stolen (supposed) on the 26th ultimo, a brindled heifer, ten months old, in good condition, no brand or earmark ; and a red-and-white steer, ten months old, slit in off ear, no brand ; both shorthorns ; value, £4.

Lyttelton. —Page Brothers, butchers, report stolen from a paddock at Ruapaki, at various times between the 2nd April and 15th August last, nine cross-bred sheep, branded P below half-circle on rump; value, £6 6s. Suspicion attached to Billy Lee, a half-caste Maori, twenty-three years of age, 5 ft. 6 in. or 7 in. high, medium build, swarthy complexion, dark hair, no hair on face. Lives in the vicinity.

Dunedin. —Thomas Calvert Briley, Mornington, reports stolen from the Kaikorai Valley, between the 7th and 9th instant, a bay cob mare, six years old, 14 hands high, strong build, black points, small star on forehead, two small white spots on back, hair rubbed off fore-arms, no brands ; had on a canvas cover with front corners cut round : value, £l4. Suspicion attached to Francis Smith, living with his parents at Mornington.

Dunedin. —Martha Davis, Caversham, reports stolen (supposed) from a paddock, on the 16th or 17th instant, a chestnut mare, hack breed, about ten years old, 14 hands high, white star on forehead, small lump between forearms and on off hind leg, no brands, unshod ; value, £4.
