Dog-tax not to be collected by Police,

(Circular No. 3/97.) For some time past it has been the custom for the police to assist the County Councils and borough authorities by collecting the dog-tax for them in some localities at a small remuneration, but, as it has been found that this duty often brings the police in contact with the people in an undesirable way, and possibly deprives some unemployed persons of a small annual income, it has been decided that in future this tax will not be collected by the police, and Inspectors are directed to so inform their subordinates, who are to make immediate arrangements for handing over this work, and prevent any such duty being undertaken by members of the Force in future. Circular No. 7/91 is hereby cancelled.

By order.

Wellington, 15th January, 1897,
